True Oldies Channel sells out

John Couger Mellon Camp was on the list of double plays that were played on The True Oldies Channel.
I was just messing around with the previously played list at 10 am and I noticed it towards the end of the list of the last 26 songs played.

I thought the whole idea of this service was to give a "True Oldies" alternative to stations that have morphed into Classic hits (i.e. B101).

How is playing the same exact music being an alternative. I know there are FM affilates but the majority are AM's. I would rather hear a song crystal clear if have that option.

Hmmm...one would think the term True Oldies to be that of the Oldies era (Alan Freed to the end of the Vietnam War seems to me a great gauge). One would also believe that the Oldies of that day would infuse a big wide swath of artists...just like we used to hear on the radio in that era when Englebert rubbed noses with the Stones.

But then again, I'm just a dumb ol' 50-something oldies jock with loyal listeners...and I can't get the good vibes from Cherry Bomb quite like I can when I hear These Boots Are Made For Walking or Le Bicyclettes de Versailles. Nothing against Melloncamp, he's got good tunes suited for the Dance and 80s Angst era - which I happen to like.

To me, True Oldies have poster people like Burt Bacharach, The Supremes, Sinatra and the Beach Boys. As one in tune with my listeners, it will be interesting to find out if they listen to the True Oldies formatted stations for their oldies fix or if they have formed opinions otherwise by now.

TrueOldies790 sounds like B101 in a can.

You mean in a tin can or it sounds canned? B101 doesn't sound like they're coming out of a tin can but they are freeze-dried after morning drive. This station doesn't exist to get numbers. They exist to save money like everyone else. They're just doing it differently.

"True Oldies" started out that way a few years ago, but I'm guessing that some affiliates and sponsors in some areas wanted a more typical classic hits approach to oldies, which would also appeal to a (somewhat) younger demo than the aging strictly '50s and '60s music audience.

There are areas of the country, especially in America's MANY rural and small markets where many stations are birdfed most of the time, where a "True Oldies" affiliate may be the only local oldies/classic hits station, and the affiliate owner (and their sponsors) don't want their station to lose the areas boomer (and post-boomer) demo to the local mostly-birdfed AC station which has a lot of '70s and '80s "AC gold" hits in their playlist, (or to people listening to fringe reception of the 50kW major-market classic hits station from the big city 50 miles away), so they demanded that "True Oldies" update their playlist to include those decades or they would find another satellite network that does. That's one possible scenario.

That was "Les Bicyclettes De Belsize".
