"True Oldies" coming to 106.7?

Just a few hours ago, Citadel flipped WJZW, a jazz station in Washington to Scott Shannon's "True Oldies" format, which is doing very well in Chicago.

With the flip of Eagle apparently forthcoming, it sounds possible this format will end up on 106.7. It is satellite delivered, so it will be run on the extremely cheap.

I would have predicted AC as a possible format for 106.7, but it sounds like Citadel lacks the $$$$$$ to do so. An all-talk format lead by Don Imus has also been rumored as well, but if that happened it would probably have no local content like WGST, WGKA, or WFOM/WALR-AM. I guess we will find out what happens soon.

I think that you might have it. If you're looking for ratings on the cheap, some kind of satellite format would be a good way to do it. I can't see talk doing it (not when WGST barely makes the book and WGKA and the Dickey stations don't make it at all). I couldn't see any more than a 2 or 3 share, less than Eagle has typically gotten, but many Eagle listeners might defect to Kicks (some would be lost to the Bull or WNGC/WTSH), but it would be on the cheap.

A "soft" easy listening AC (not Beautiful Music), to serve as an alternate to the quite hard-for-AC B98.5, is an idea I hadn't thought of. And you could VT it if you couldn't find it on a satellite feed. Peach got respectable shares with it over the years.

Not a great fit I would think but who knows.

BTW someone put out a APB on Brent. He might be icing down a bottle of Champagne as we speak.

I would say oldies are a good possibility with the number of stations flipping back to oldies lately. Even if Eagle 106.7 does not go oldies you can bet that Atlanta will more than likely have an oldies station by the time PPM rolls out next year since both the Rock and Oldies formats seem to do really well with PPM.

From what I've heard, Scott Shannon's True Oldies are also doing well in Knoxville.

Imus? Really? Boy there's a ratings winner. Maybe they can do Oldies during the day and Alternative at night. Fox-X?

I do the imaging for a newly flipped Oldies (Classic Hits) station that DOES run the I-Man in the morning, and it plays well with the regular format. Lot's of cross promotion, and overall seems to be doing very well. Seems the really high-dollar talent is getting the gas pipe ina lot of markets. I wonder how many of them were sat down and asked if they wourd consider working for less.."Pride pays less than pity" a famous radio guy once said..and I think I would certainly consider reducing my yearly salary from 325K to a paltry 220K a year if asked..and/or given the option of either that or not working.

Steve Mitchell is one of the smoothest talents in town, and one of the nicest guys with a great work ethic..Hope somebody picks him up somewhere!

My prediction of "Imus in morning drive and then True Oldies" is based on the following:

1. Citadel CEO Farid Suleman told the press he expects the syndicated version of Imus to be a big money maker for the company. Having an Atlanta affiliate would be huge for them.

2. True Oldies is an inexpensive format to run and doesn't need much in the way of ratings to make money.

3. Both Imus and True Oldies appeal to an older demo.

I guess we'll find out a week from Monday.

and please don't get me wrong here. It saddens me to see Rhubarb out of work. It's a shock and a travesty. If rhybarb doesn't get another job here quickly I'll be royally pissed. He didn't deserve his fate today. What a crock of Dog Squeeze!

Rhubarb's a pro...

I don't think he'll be out that long.
I agree he's a pro but where do you imagine he'd be likely to wind up in the market? There aren't any real openings and all the stations have new shows?

The best example of an oldies station is KRTH 101 In Los Angeles. They have been a perennial Top 10 station there forever and have added many 70's classics in the last couple of years.

Legend 96.7? Think Moby would double up with him?

That would be funny! Mark Richards blew up Fox 97, blows up The Eagle just to bring back oldies? If any station needs to blow up hire Mark Richards the "Station and Personality Killer".

Ironically, they blew out the wrong people, the content side. If Citadel is having problems generating revenue, they need to start chopping the Sales Managers and GM's who could not make it happen on the street. It's not like they did not see this happening on a weekly basis with all of the reporting that is done upstream.

How about the regional people who could not move the needle. How about the President of the company who surely saw this coming.

Think about it, any one that was listening to the oldies 1950-1969 or so that were in there 20's-30's at that time are now way to old for advertisers to care in Atl. (now 65-75). Move to Fla. and you can fade away with oldies galore in most cities down there.

The avg. age in Atl is 32-34, so stop it with the oldies possibilities of coming back here, it will never happen on a full FM stick. The older people we do have spend there vacation time out of the country or state and won't fill out a diary anyway.

The new oldies in this town is 97.1., so tune in and enjoy!

My wife is 29 and not even from this country and I'm sure she'd listen to an oldies station. Can't beat Motown and some other 60's songs over boring hip hop and Daughtry-type rock. I'd welcome a station like that in a hearbeat (and I'm not close to 60 either).

Fire the CEO....now there's a concept!
Any possibility Sulman will lose his job for destroying Citadel by overloading the company with debt it can't service? Buying markets he had no inkling about how to operate and compete? Who talked the shareholders into this?
Who spoke only of the upside.....but not even one word about the potential downside??
The Mays boys come out smelling like roses from the mess they've made. Seems like the guys who make all of the messes also make all of the money.
I'm worried big time about my job. I make next to nothing but I am a "cost of doing business."
Someone posted a while back that if you're not putting money on the table you are always at risk. Doesn't count if you facilitate the table or the room the table sits in.....you gotta be the guy bringin' the green to the table to count as non-expendable.
I'm going back on my meds now....have a good day!

I am.. I was in Charlotte the other day and they are overrun with oldies formats, just like we are overrun with Country.
