True Oldies on 94.7

What's the word on the street in regards to Scott Shannon's True Oldies on 94.7 ? People like it ? Ratings seem to be going the right way.. Will the format make it ? It seems like 94.7 is kind of a cursed frequency, where just about everything that has been thrown on 94.7 through the years has not been given enough time to mature.. Your thoughts, I'm from out of town, and interested.. Thank you,.

I've heard that they are pulling a rating at night that is, well, between a 0.1 and 0.3 for the 25-54 demo. Their 12+ numbers are certainly higher than anything that frequency has seen in a while, but I'd be interested whether Citadel will make a move for a younger audience. Then again, it all has to do with the billing: if WZZN can manage a high power ratio, they'll be safe.

The question in my mind is "how much is enough?" I.e. will Citadel be satisfied with a fixed number or will they want to grow? They sound terrible to my ears. By that, I mean the air talent sounds so old and not relatable. I loved listening to all of them in their prime. There are stations like WMJI Cleveland, KRTH Los Angeles, KVIL Dallas and WMJX Miami that do a great job in the format and pull good numbers. They are superbly programmed and if you listen closely, you'll notice most of them have morphed musically into a classic hits format while retaining the basic imaging and feel of their oldies format. Smart move -- instead of pissing off and blowing away cume, they've moved younger while keeping as much of the previous cume as possible.

I wonder why market #3, Midwest, great top forty heritage, can't put a killer station on the air along those lines and make good money with it. I'd see it pulling around a 3.3 (12 +) and making solid inroads in demo. Would the gains be worth the investment in the product? Not sure. Somebody smarter than me would have to weigh in.

Before anyone gets too skeptical, it's interesting that the 2nd phase ratings of the Winter Book announced yesterday (Monday) continue to be encouraging for 94.7. While they stay at 2.7 overall, they have passed up WDRV. If you look at in terms of rock music type stations (eliminating WUSN from this discussion), 94.7 is now (however much you count the latest partial ratings) 2nd - that is SECOND - among the 'rock music' stations which target 35+. That's ahead of WDRV, WLUP (which may not target exactly the same demographic), WXRT, and WJMK.

Speaking of WJMK, 94.7 not only continues to beat them in overall ratings, but if memory serves, the 2.7 is HIGHER than what WJMK had when it dumped oldies to start JACK-FM a couple of years ago.

This gives the "old" WLS combo (for those that still think of this as WLS AM & FM) a strong presence among 35+ with both talk and music leaders - reaching different audiences in the same age ranges.

Granted, a partial ratings book isn't decisive, but it's the latest info we have for the time being.....
