During my same Walmart trip (see post below) I was talking to a sales guy who asked me what system I was interested more in ... XM or Sirius. I said "XM." He said "no way. I'd go with Sirius. Much better programming. They used to be less popular than XM. Now they are blowing past XM."

My main reasons for checking into XM more than Sirius was the fact Sirius doesn't have an elevator music channel like XM and Sirius' smooth jazz channel doesn't have as large a playlist as XM's. Those are the two most important channels to me. He looked at me with a blank stare. LOL

Seriously, I don't follow satellite radio as much as regular radio, but I'm starting to. Is this guy right? Is Sirius taking over the top spot? Will XM ever be bought out by Sirius and then my equipment I'm considering buying will be worthless? And no elevator music or decent smooth jazz?

Or is this just a "know-it-all Walmart sales rep?" :)

I just went in there, grabbed a Roady2. Went to the register, some lady had to type a code and forgot to run it over the magnetic field so I had to be searched by the old guy watching the door.

No need for a sales guy.

As for XM, there is lots of good elevator and smooth jazz music. I recommend Sunny (XM24) which is my personal favorite out of the instrumental based stations.

And XM is still the most popular out of the 2.<P ID="signature">______________

They are hardly blowing past XM. XM has over twice as many subs as Sirius has. Their revenue is increasing and their losses are decreasing, while Sirius' revenue AND losses are both increasing.

A friend of mine also got XM because of their jazz lineup. The Latin jazz station is what sold him.

The latter is correct. An 8.00 an hour salesmen doesn't know too much. Just look at the stock figures. Go with XM. If you don't own a TV set and enjoy Football, then Sirius is for you. Sirius is also fine if your a Classic Rock guru,(Top Tracks on XM has been weak). That might be another reason. XM the rest of the way.

I think you answered your own question. The better satellite service depends on what you like. If you like beautiful music and an instrumental heavy smooth jazz, XM definitely does better in those areas. I like smooth jazz and prefer Sirius Jazz Cafe to Watercolors on XM because it sounds more like a terrestrial radio station. Of course, this also means a lower instrumental to vocal ratio and more clutter. I still listen to Watercolors fairly often and find it to be a good station. You won't be disappointed if you select XM.

I've also been looking at both formats and would appreciate any suggestions given my eclectic tastes in music.
I do NOT like smooth jazz but love traditional (i.e. Real) Jazz and Big Band.
Other music I like is:
Classic Rock -- not "adult contemporary soft smooth rock"-- but rock like Strawberry Alarm Clock to Uriah Heep to early Led Zep.
Old Folk like The Weavers to Peter, Paul & Mary
Minimalist Classical like John Adams or Steve Reich
Punk like Black Flag or Dead Kennedys
Industrial like Throbbing Gristle or Nurse with Wound.
Electronic like Tangerine Dream
Hypnotic Techno and Trance
Bluegrass not C/W
I also like "alternative" news and views to counter-balance news by the oligopoly media outlets.
??XM or Sirius??
Thanks!

What I've found is that one service is better in some of these areas while the other is preferable in some others. What you might want to consider is the free online trial of both services, and I would recommend you get the trial subscription when you will have plenty of time to listen and both at the same time. That way, you can compare extensively and simultaneously. If you listen to one and then the other, the last one you pick will almost always sound better simply because you listened to it last.

> I do NOT like smooth jazz but love traditional (i.e. Real)
> Jazz and Big Band.

I would say XM is probably a little bit better here, especially with Sirius Standard Time being absorbed into Swing Street in a little over two weeks. XM has Real Jazz for traditional jazz and Frank's Place for standards. Frank's Place has been all standards everytime I've tuned it in. Sirius has Pure Jazz, which is calls "classic jazz" and Swing Street/Standard Time. Once these two get combined, I have no idea how they'll sound. Also, both services office showtunes, and, if it influences you any, XM has a Latin jazz channel.

> Other music I like is:
> Classic Rock -- not "adult contemporary soft smooth rock"--
> but rock like Strawberry Alarm Clock to Uriah Heep to early
> Led Zep.

I'm not sure you'll find happiness with either service in this category. Sirius, however, offers a deeper classic rock selection than XM. The negative is that you have to flip between two channels. Sirius has an early classic rock and a late classic rock channel while XM's Top Tracks just focuses on the most popular classic rock songs and is a little repetitive. Personally, I prefer XM's Top Tracks, mostly because I don't like flipping between two channels for classic rock. Both also offer a channel that goes deeper. Sirius calls it the Vault while XM has Deep Tracks.

> Old Folk like The Weavers to Peter, Paul & Mary

Not sure about this one. Don't really listen to folk much. However, both services offer folk channels.

> Minimalist Classical like John Adams or Steve Reich

Both channels offer three classical channels. All three are pretty similar. I generally prefer XM simply because XM tends to have a little better sound quality than Sirius.

> Punk like Black Flag or Dead Kennedys

Another one I don't listen to very often. Fungus on XM has some punk and ska while Faction on Sirius has punk, hip-hop and hard rock mixed together.

> Electronic like Tangerine Dream
> Hypnotic Techno and Trance

XM has an electronic channel in The System. Never have listened to it. Don't know what it's like. Sirius offers trance and progressive house in Area 63 and "smooth electronic" in Chill. I do listen to Chill on occasion as it sounds kind of smooth jazzy. Blu 102.9 in Santa Fe streams at its website, and it's a pure chill station. That might be a good benchmark for the kind of music on Sirius Chill. BTW, just flipped on The System, and it sounds nothing like Chill on Sirius.

> Bluegrass not C/W

Both have Bluegrass channels. Both are pretty similar.

> I also like "alternative" news and views to counter-balance

Not sure what you mean with the word "alternative" being in quotes. However, if you're referring to liberal talk, Air America is offerred on XM. From everything I've heard, the left wing talk on Sirius is rather lacking, though I understand it may be the exclusive home of Ed Schultz, who I prefer to pretty much all Air America hosts. If you mean "alternative" as in the alternative-lifestyle, Sirius has a gay/lesbian channel. However, I couldn't tell you anything about it. Not being gay, it doesn't interest me.

XM has Air America as long as it can stay funded financially, because no one really listens, and Democracy Now, you'll need a Bi- Sexual channel that neither service provides.

No, like I said: "NOT gay". Nor bi. (I won't say what my wife thought of apco's juvenile comment--it would be bleeped.) Nor bigoted! Just news/talk as far left of center as Rush or Clear Channel or Fox is far right of center--for informational BALANCE. But forget that request.
Irrespective of bigoted and juvenile comments, I was mostly interested in ADULTS >music< comparison of XM and Sirius.

MSNBC - 130 (even if it the audio feed from the cable channel)
BBC WORLD - 131
C-SPAN RADIO - 132
XMPR - 133 (especially "Sounds Eclectic" for those music fanatics)

I'm hoping for 'Democracy Now' to be put into the XMPR lineup, but I usually watch the first hour on Link TV through DirecTV occasionally. KFAI in the Twin Cities is the only station to carry 'Democracy Now' on the radio, and that's usually at noon.

Definitely for Air America, as most of the affiliates never play the morning shows, or Randi Rhodes (at least half of her show anyway, Ed Schultz plays two hours after Al).

XMPR has a decent lineup, if you like NPR and public radio.

Then you want Fox.

Fox is the only national outlet that has been shown to fall right at the political center. All others are to the left to one degree or another, making Fox, though being right at the center, "appear" to lean right to those on the left. So, the only outlet as far to the left as Fox is to the right is...Fox!

You guys don't realize how much your bias alters your perception of reality...for you, the left is the center! It's not, of course...but let's not get into all of that here on the XM forum.

Anyway, as I said, technically speaking, what you say you want is Fox!

And it's on XM... :)

Yes. These folks are the kind who will fall for the Stern-type hype.

On the other hand, this whole "better programming" thing is showing something interesting -- people say they want bigger and deeper playlists, XM gives that to them, Sirius initially follows but later tightens, people start saying Sirius has better programming!

aahh You "forgot" to quote all of the sentence. "Just news/talk as far left of center as Rush or Clear Channel or Fox is far right of center--**for informational BALANCE.** Balance being the key for we who have thinking brains and do not like to be spoon fed.

You write: "So, the only outlet as far to the left as Fox is to the right is...Fox!"

?WTF? (So I guess Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan were bleeding heart liberals?)

Yup, whatever you say...and: War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength. And I'll add: Democracy is Fascist

"There's an old saying in Tennessee—I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee—that says, fool me once, shame on—shame on you. Fool me—you can't get fooled again."—George Bush Nashville, Tenn., Sept. 17, 2002

"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts." Bertrand Russell

!!!!Again I request: "But FORGET that [left of center news/talk] request.
Irrespective of bigoted and juvenile comments, I was mostly interested in ADULTS >music< comparison of XM and Sirius." MUSIC being the operative word!!

The previous inane and banal replies to my post by two members not-withstanding, I appreciate the others' advice and will probably give XM a try. Thank you very much!, THX

Top Tracks on XM may be weak--given simply because there is no personality and the music rotation resembles that of terristrial classic rock radio, but the varied and extensive playlist, and personalities of Deep Tracks on XM are far superior to The Vault on Sirius.

Ask on the XM board, and you're going to get a lot of pro-XM opinion. I've had both services for several years, and strongly prefer Sirius. XM devotes a lot of channels to obscure music, and runs most of the "hits" channels jockless & cheap.

It's all a matter of taste. Take the 3 day free web preview for Sirius & see for yourself. I recently dropped down to one XM subscription, and I'm about to add my 4th Sirius tuner.<P ID="edit"><FONT class="small">Edited by js on 09/13/05 08:20 AM.</FONT></P>
