Trump threatens a 100% tariff on foreign-made films

i think Trump is using Tariffs as a way to punish his enemies and he's now going after Hollywood due it's association with liberals, the tariffs on other countries is cause he can't go to war with nations without congressional approval anyway and this is his only legal way to declare war without blowing places up cause he's not getting his way.

does Kirk Cameron film anything outside the US?

Now there is a letter sent to the Trump Administration over how to implant incentives for filming within the United States.

Leaders of Hollywood unions and representatives of major studios joined with Jon Voight in penning a letter to Donald Trump calling for expanded film and TV production incentives.

What was left unmentioned in the letter was Trump’s proposal for 100% tariffs on films produced in other countries.“We appreciate and thank you for the support you have shown the industry,” the letter read. “We also appreciate your understanding of the need to increase domestic film and television production to bring back American jobs and write seeking your support for the inclusion of three film and television priorities in the reconciliation package currently being drafted in Congress.”

Here is Croatia responding to the Tariff threats and keep in mind this country has been mentioned for filming Game of Thrones.

Here are responses from New Zealand and Cannes film festival over the same issue.

Yes this is the current state of tariffs. The courts have blocked the administration from issuing tariffs. Yes it’s all industries as seen in this ruling.

Federal appeals court temporarily reinstates most of Trump's sweeping tariffs - https://www.reuters.com/business/us...unlawful-stirs-relief-uncertainty-2025-05-29/

Still this Tariffs issue will go back to congress and courts. The tariffs are temporary as of this posting. This affects everything from manufacturing to film and TV production.

Trump will most likely get the Supreme Court to make his tariffs go through after these appeals and counterappeals in all forms of courts before them.

But that’s everything not just film and TV operations. It’s going everywhere if approved.

I thought executive orders are dealt with by courts exclusively because there is no congressional input to the order and they have to decide whether an order meets Constitutional grounds

I watched a movie about the federal government reopening Alcatraz. It was filmed in Berlin. Huh?

I knew with the amount of damage done to Alcatraz it had to be a set, but what made it necessary to go all the way to Berlin?

Here we go again with film tariffs in the news again also we mention this here before how does one define American film and Foreign films exactly. First of all we previously mention that certain US films (Made by Paramount, MGM, Disney, WB, Universal Pictures) are done outside the country. Also we previously mentioned that theres are "Foreign TV and films" made in the USA and they are owned by entities from outside the US such as Sony Entertainment whose TV and Film operations are in Culver City, but their CEO's and boards office is in Japan. Same for Fremantle their content is made in the US and their main office for their CEO and board are in the UK.

Claiming that movie production “has been stolen’’ from Hollywood and the U.S., Trump posted on his Truth Social platform that “I will be imposing a 100% tariff on any and all movies that are made outside of the United States.’’

It was unclear how these tariffs would operate, since movies and TV shows can be transmitted digitally without going through ports. Also unclear is what it would mean for U.S. movies filmed on foreign locations — think James Bond and Jason Bourne — or what legal basis the president would claim for imposing the tariffs.

The president had first issued the threat back in May. He has yet to specify when the tariff might go into effect.

Movies are an odd battleground for a U.S. trade war. “Unlike any other country’s film industry, U.S. movies are the most accessible, well-known, and best performing due to the numerous language options and worldwide reach provided by U.S.-based studios,’' trade analyst Jacob Jensen of the center-right American Action Forum wrote in a July commentary.

Honestly, the tax should probably go the other way, i.e. an export tax.

Hollywood should reflect American values, and that means taking steps to prevent government censors from governments like Saudi Arabia and China from having a say in US film production. That probably means decoupling Disney, Universal, and other studios from those markets.
