Either type do just fine in high winds. It's the flying debris that is the problem. Here on Kaua'i, we have a 50 ft. self-supporting tower that survived a Cat 5 (150 mph + wind) in 1992, and another 450' FM tower in Lihue that survived. The 50' tower had a 10 ft. solid microwave dish on the top, and it did not even bend. But just down the hill at nearly the same location, another 400 ft. guyed tower went down because of a sheet of plywood that cut through a section of the tower, mid-way up.
Flying debris is the problem. So a rural tower in good condition with nothing else nearby will likely be OK.
