Trust me this is a stunt!

Hey! Hey! Hey!
I'm in that general L.V/Reading vicinity. People everywhere are talking about this. They' changing the station and breaking off the knob.

Actually, nobody is talking about these flips. We'll be tuned into 106.1 and 104.5 just slightly less than the new 107.5, which nobody is talking about either. And how does a person who does not speak English know that there is a Rumba 104.5? Is there a Spanish clone of this board?

I hope something better comes on at 5:00, but I doubt it.

I totally agree that this is a stunt, and an amusing one at that. Let's see what 5pm brings!! Something makes me think we will indeed get that alternative rock station everyone wants. Somethings that radio companies do make perfect business sense, this makes absolutely no sense in that respect. In some markets the money might be on this demographic, but here it's not. The money points to Modern Rock.

Hack I think most of them have found employment at other rock stations throughout the area and country. It's a simple fact, this is not a Spanish dominated market like NYC. Unless Clear Channel is catering to the migrant workers in Hammonton NJ this format makes zero sense. The money will lead to rock, something that can be comboed up with Q102 to appeal to suburban anglo listeners.....very simple.

FINALLY!!! An intelligent argument!!! Praise you UncleBozo. I think it's an absolutly awful choice to go to Spanish... I don't think it's going to work but I guess we'll see. I really don't think the money is in rock though. I just don't see it. You need to either get a high priced morning show or pay syndication fees to get one to really have a very successful rocker. I think the cost isn't going to be as high as the profit margins. Even though I really see New Rock on an upswing. The bands that are hitting the airwaves right now are breaking the mold. They're sounding different from each other, the music is just getting better. But I don't see it as a profitable format in this market especially with the way the rock listeners are already so fragmented. Basically you're going after a portion of a portion of a demographic.

With Spanish you're trying to nail a whole fricking demo with one shot! To me it seems like a good business decesion to at least try it.

I dunno what they would go to but I just don't see rock as profitable.

Hack I can totally respect what you are saying. I give them credit for doing this format(If it is indeed the real one), but I don't see how they can ride it for too long. Perhaps Modern Rock is not the answer, but something between that and Q-102 might be. I'm thinking the answer might be something just short of Alternative, perhaps a variation of [email protected] in San Francisco or Star 98.7 in LA. While Star doesn't set the world on fire in LA there is a time and place for everything and I believe this could be the place. No need for heavy personality on this format, it would be the music that matters. Throw on a decent sounding morning show and a half talented afternoon person and you have a winner. That would really be where the whole is right now. Good arguement though, you make alot of sense. ;D

First you say 104.5 is flipping to rock at noon, now you say they're stunting?

Where are you getting your "information"?

I'm not thrilled about this, but I'm not going to call the music "garbage" or say it "sounds the same".

Change the station and move on with life if you hate this new format.

no offense, but why should I trust you? Do you have inside info that this is a stunt (you don't need to go into details if so, just yes or no will do)? Or is this all just speculation on your part?

Correct me if I'm wrong with the numbers here:

It is reported that 5% of Philadelphia's 12+ population is hispanic
104.5 is the only Spanish-language station on the FM dial in Philadelphia.
...then shouldn't they get close to a 5.0 share in the ratings?

If so, THAT is why this IS the format and not a stunt!!!

There are many different types of Spanish-language formats. Just because this station plays Spanish-language music doesn't mean that the majority of Spanish-language speakers are going to tune in. What if they don't like this type of music?

And for the record, this is not a slam on CC.

I disgree with Uncle that Philly needs a station like ALICE/SF or STAR/LA. It wasn't that long ago when several different Hot ACs failed and failed badly in Philadelphia. Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it, It's such recent history that there's no way any radio group will have any motivation to flip Hot AC.

My prediction is that this will be a top 10 station. It will especially do well 18-34. What a brilliant and futuristic move on CCs part. It's about time Philadelphia had a FM Spanish language station.

Jay, it may be a top 10 station, it may do great 18-34, but even with the best numbers possible, it will never bill as well as a hot ac with a 2 share.

If what's on 104.5 is a stunt -- and I think it is -- then they snookered Philly.com good and proper.

Philly.com has an article trumpeting the arrival of "Rumba Ciento Cinco Punta Cinco", complete with straight-faced quotes from CC brass.

They've set up a "comment line" as well. Do I smell a "back by popular demand...Sunny 104.5"? Starting with Christmas music (hell, today is August 23rd, that's almost Christmas eve) and then Sunny returns in January ????

Take their legal ID (which I heard over-the-air at 1:03 this afternoon). It sounds cheesy, but not poorly made. I bet it was INTENDED to sound cheesy in the first place, just to tweak the radio nerds.

I'm sorry; I'm just not buying it. If Rumba (which is NOT what they're playing) 104.5 is real, I'll eat this post, electrons and all.

Bill

Almost 7, and still rumba. Hey, maybe they're just gonna stunt for another 2 weeks with this, before the real format comes.

Better get your bib on. Can you imagine how it would play in the politically correct press if CC suddenly "took away" the new Latina (or is Hispanic?) station? All sorts of stories like "How could the company so rudely tease the Spanish speaking population, playing them for fools...yada yada yada." It's here to stay. I don't like it; In my opinion it's un-American, but it's here to stay.

What is so un-American about giving people the option on what they can listen?

I must have missed the small print on the declaration of independence...."All men who speak english are created equal"

Back to the original title, sure doesnt look like a stunt to me...

It is not. And it is a format that should get around a 2.2 share.

Spanish is a language, not a format... so a big portion of Philadelphia area Hispancs will not like it, since it has a definitely 18-34 tropical format. But it is a good format choice.
