Truth or Consequences: did anyone see this??

Hi

A lot of you sure know your classic TV, so I am putting this out....

Back when Bob Barker was hosting Truth or Consequences during the Vietnam War, it was common (maybe once a week) to surprise the wife of a troop on duty in Vietnam who was specially flown in to surprise her for a quick reunion before going back.

Often I guess there would be a stunt involved where other women were privy to the surprise, but the one wife wasn't. Usually there would be a guy incognito, and once the mask or whatever came off, the organ would play and the couple would be in a long embrace.

My late mother told me once that she saw one episode where the mask came off, and the wife just snarled or whatever, and said, "Oh, it's youuuuuuuu." I have no reason to doubt my mother.....

I seem to have read a different account of what had to be the same occurrence...I think it read that the wife said "What are YOU doing here?!?!"

OK then.....has anybody actually seen this? And since Ralph Edwards' estate has gobs of video, why have I not seen this, maybe via YouTube, if this actually aired? (Hard to believe they didn't scrap this ep!) Any stories about this?

Inquiring minds and all that.

The way I heard the story, it was the husband with the "What are you doing here?" reaction, although the way you tell it, the wife makes more sense. (I think I read it on the pre-Newscorp buying it and turning it to crap "Jump The Shark".) I've seen a few T Or C clips on TouTube, but no complete episodes.

Folks, I think we've got another "I love my cigar but I take it
out of my mouth once in awhile" story (Groucho's reponse to
a woman who, when he asked her why she had nineteen kids--
the number actually varies--said, "I love my husband." The
truth behind that story has always been in dispute, since Groucho
said he didn't say it, then on another occasion said he did.)
This'll probably keep us going for months. ;D

It was a regular part of the program as I recall.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truth_or_Consequences

"In many broadcasts, the stunts on Truth or Consequences included a popular, but emotional, heart-rending surprise for a contestant, that being the reunion with a long-lost relative or with an enlisted son or daughter returning from military duty overseas, particularly Vietnam. Sometimes, if that military person was based in California, his or her spouse or parents were flown in for that reunion."

I'd hate to think my mama fibbed on me....!

I would say, that if it happened, it would be one of THE classic moments on TV, however cruel.

I did write Ralph Edwards Productions IIRC, and got no reply, if that tells us anything! But oh boy, what a moment that would be.
