Trying to remember a name

Hi...does anyone remember the name of the person who owned a Bloosmburg area radio station early 1980's...maybe the last name is Grimes..

Paul Grimes.

That maybe it...did something happend at the radio station he worked at...was there a fire. It happened in the 1980's a group of us old radio types were trying to remember what happened.

The last I heard of Paul was that he was an officer for the Pa. Fish and Boat Commission. Talk about a 360!

There was also a Dick Grimes who went to WKBW from WICK in 1968. He later worked as Peter Jackson at WIBG and KQV in Pittsburg. He got out of radio and was wroking for Mayor Risso in Philly in the 1970s.

Last I heard, he passed away some years ago. People get mixep up with their names (Paul and Dick Grimes). Anyone know anything about him?

Paul always claimed Dick Grimes was a cousin.
Paul worked for many years at the old WPTS radio doing the afternoon drive show until signoff. His handle was "The FatCat of Record Land" and he always signed off with the Angels "Thank You and Good Night".
I'm not sure there was a fire involving Paul's association with the Berwick station, (there was the famous Joe Dobbs fire in 1967 at the WICK studios on Adams Avenue in Scranton). Paul worked or co-owned WBRX, 1280 in Berwick which went dark until Kevin Fennessey brought it back to life.
And not to start another Fennessey-Bobby Hatfield war here again, the past few weeks I've had to be at Geisinger in Danville for a medical condition. I tuned into News Radio 930AM which was playing oldies. But the News Radio monnicker seems to be working even though they play music. We passed an accident on the way out of town (Danville) and a few minutes after we passed it, 930 AM was doing a report on the incident, complete with a live report from the scene. Also drove by the studios too.
Anyway, Dick Grimes was at WIBG doing news in the 60s and 70s. Didn't hear he died.
Tommy Grimes on Magic 93 is I believe related to Paul and Dick too. But not 100% sure of that.

Yonk: I have discussed 930 AM's identity crisis on this board in the past. While driving to Pittsburgh last year, I was listening to 930 AM while passing through Berwick and Bloomsburg. I mentioned here they were calling themselves "news radio," but were playing Oldies. This station is sill in an identity crisis. Instead of "news radio," why not just call it "AM 930 WHLM?"

This so-called "war" between Fennessy and Hatfield was started by Hatfield when he was spewing out information about Fennessy's personal life...information that did not belong on this board. Hatfield hi-jacked a thread started by someone asking Kevin's whereabouts. Hatfield must feel like a really big man and proud of himself for talking about Fennessy's personal life like he did. If it wasn't for Fennessy, WHLM would not be on the air today...and Hatfield would not be a station owner. Hatfield was lucky to have someone like Fennessy helping him out. If it wasn't for Fennessy, I wouldn't have started my Broadcasting career. Fennessy helped me start my career, after the former owner of WSER in Elkton, Maryland tried to trash it.

I don't agree.

On WNEP, I like to watch Desperate Housewives and Grey's Anatomy. I also enjoy when they have Penn State games on, as well as the Penn State Football Story. I even enjoy reruns of Frasier on Channel 16.

Yet...they call themselves "The News Station."

Does that mean WNEP has an identity crisis? I think not.

WHLM calls themselves "Newsradio" and they play oldies. So what? Clearly, as Yonkster posted, this radio station has a commitment to local news. Just like WNEP, but obviously on a much smaller scale.

Exactly right. WILK's morning show is called the "Morning News with Nancy and Kevin", but let's face it the only one doing news is Bud Brown. Nancy and Kevin give opinion....

If you are a news station, then be one. If you are a music station, don't identify the station as "news radio." They seem to be a full-service station. Therefore, the "news radio" should be dropped from the moniker. Just my opinion.

Are they running Bloomsburg University football this year?

(there was the famous Joe Dobbs fire in 1967 at the WICK studios on Adams Avenue in Scranton)

Now there's a memory. Yonk, you jolt me, you shake loose thoughts that have been lost for years. That fire is something I remember differently. More to come, maybe soon, if anyone is interested.

Well please help jog our memory....it was in the 1980's and the fire at the station was suspicious...but that is all we can remember.

and sadly it comes straight from the newspaper or WNEP. It's terrible when a news veteran is reduced to rewrites.

Just what else does Bud Brown do when he's not paraphrasing other media reports?! Is he part of WILK's "news department"? I guess he just does newspaper re-writes. BTW, what does Nancy Kman do beyond trying to keep Chia Kev on a short leash? I think she would be better suited to doing a "mommy" show. She is beyond bad. So sad...

I remain a regular listener, but, the show has gone downhill. More times than not fiction replaces the truth.
Just because it is opinion doesn't mean it shouldn't be factual.
When they first teamed up they had diverse opinions, Nancy used to give a steadying "hand", but now one just parrots the other.
I wouldn't say Nancy is beyond bad, but it makes one wonder, when Kevin is away she always requires a sub co-host. Might just be a confidence issue.
Kevin has gotten downright silly. He talk's it up so brave when he has someone one the phone, but, I will never forget when Sen. Santorum dropped by the studio, I never heard a radio pro stammer so much. :-\

Maybe it's time to bring back the "Vopper"
Fred had many flaws, but he was never intimitated.

Yeah, tell me what you remember. I was only in the 7th grade then but remember it being covered by all the TV stations.

I think he was talking about the WICK fire in Scranton, not the WBRX Paul Grimes deal.

I don't know, he sounds like he's enjoying himself!!!

I totally disagree with you. Nancy Kman does disagree with Kevin on many occasions and God love her, I don't think anyone can keep him leashed. He is a one of a kind opinion maker. And the mommy comment, sorry, can't buy that either. Look at the balance and difference they bring to the show. They sound good, have good listenership and billing (look at the spot load!!, somebody's buying them and liking them!!!!) and the fact that WILK covers major news events like the Yankees coming to town live is a major plus. And as far as Nancy needing a partner, I think she just wants to add balance by having Joe Thomas or Rob Nyhard on when Kevin is away. Or maybe she just needs a break from him, ever think of that???!!!??
Nothing good could come of bringing back the Vop, God bless his curly headed soul.
WILK's success and consistency has been in large part due to Nancy Kman's off the field efforts. Disagree, pout, say I'm full of it, but I think if you investigate the facts further, you'll see I'm correct.
