TSN acquires MLS broadcast rights

I liked the idea of soccer being on a broadcast network, but as long as we can see the game still that all that matters. Since cable penetration is so high in Canada, the viewers won't have to0 much problems going where the games are.

It seems like sports aren't much of a priority on the CBC anymore.

Even though cable/satellite penetration in Canada is around 90%, not all subscribers get TSN - at least with Rogers in Ontario, digital basic does not include TSN. I would bet Sportsnet has higher penetration in Ontario than TSN in terms of the number of subs, since Sportsnet is on basic cable with Rogers and most of Ontario's major cities have Rogers exclusively for cable, save for Hamilton and Windsor.

M.J. You're right on the money with the cable here in Ottawa. TSN is not on basic cable here. TSN is on channel 30 in Ottawa, Basic cable cuts out everything from 29 to 59. I have expanded basic, so I do get TSN. Rogers Sportsnet is on channel 27 here and is on basic.

I think you're right also that Sportsnet has higher penetration in Ontario, after all they own it, so why wouldn't they want to offer it instead of the competition?

For cable here, it's Rogers only.

MLS is considered, politely, borderline second division football by the rest of the world. You watch one MLS game, then you turn on the EPL, the Bundesliga, or Italy...and you never go back.

ESPNTSN can dress it up all they like. It's still not true "Major League" Soccer.

TSN scores a record audience in its inaugural game as the official broadcaster of Major League Soccer in Canada. The highly-anticipated Vancouver Whitecaps FC–Toronto FC season opening game on Saturday attracted an average audience of 289,000 viewers on TSN – making it the most watched MLS game ever on Canadian television.

And they say no one cares about the game.

Great! For a cable only game, I'd consider that a success. I hope it will continue, if it does, then it's a win-win for TSN and MLS.
