TSN Radio?

FROM "Sure to be an interesting year..."

"The topic gets more interesting when you consider the potential acquisition of the Ontario Teachers Pension Fund’s shares in MLSE by Rogers. Forget for a minute the TV rights to the Leafs (and Raptors), think about the implications on radio. If the Fan takes the Leafs back, what effect does it have on 640? You imagine that they would be 100% out of the sports business. Whither Bill Watters at that point? "

On another note, when Team 1050 was around, competing with Fan 590, it was like having 2 1/2 sports stations in the Winter months with AM 640 maintaining "leafs talk" and other hockey related programming.

Isn't TSN owned by CTV/GlobeMedia? If so, they can flipped their Toronto station CHUM 1050, Montreal station CKGM 990, Ottawa station CFGO 1200, Winnipeg station CFRW 1290, and Vancouver station CKST 1040. Also, Astral's affiliate CFRN 1260 in Edmonton, and CKMX 1060 Calgary.

Yes, they can go all sports all they want, but they also have to be careful not to make the mistakes the Team radio network made.

They still need local when local is needed in order to make things work.
People didn't care to tune in when the topic was all about a hockey or other sports team miles away.

Here's the bigger problem:
What sports will 1050 Toronto cover?

All interesting points raised. With TSN already having national TV rights they could easily negotiate a deal with the CFL for national radio rights. As it stands now the only CFL market with a CTVgm station broadcasting CFL games is Vancouver, where the BC Lions are on Team 1040. This network in theory would include CKST Vancouver, CFRW Winnipeg, CHUM Toronto, and CKGM Montreal as O&O stations, with CHML Hamilton, CHED Edmonton, CHQR Calgary, and CKRM Regina as affiliate stations. In Winnipeg, Toronto, and Montreal, CFL broadcast rights would have to move from other stations.

Aside from CFL football though, TSN Radio wouldn't have a lot to broadcast, especially if Rogers gets hold of the Raptors and Leafs and they both end up on The Fan 590. They'll have to rely heavily on sports talk, and possibly simulcasts with the television TSN.

They have sports in Calgary on CFAC 960 which they own, so why would they flip 1060? Believe me, Calgary couldn't support 2 sports stations.

CFAC is owned by Rogers, not CTV-Globemedia. Rogers will be a competitor for the new TSN Sports station. Just look at Toronto. Rogers own CJCL 590 THE FAN and CHUM 1050 will become the new Sports station.

Maybe 1050 CHUM should be a country station. Toronto lacks one of those it seems.

The oldies format on 1050 had a 1.7 share before the plug was pulled.
I suppose they could still get a good 2.0 share as a country station, but anything less than a 1.7 would be pointless.

Practically, anything can be better than the current CP24 simulcast -- didn't someone here mentioned that, since dumping oldies for a simulcast, 1050 now has a 0.0 share?

Yes, CTV chose not to pay for the tone when PPM came to be.
Thus explaining the 0.0 rating, but still, how would they get any ratings when a simple AM walkman is most often 7 seconds off the CP24 tv channel.

As a result of that, there is no desire to listen on a walkman in a coffee shop, restaurant, bar or even a modern day Mcdonalds. (yes, all newly renovated Mcdonalds now have flat screen tvs on and tuned to CP24, but with no volume)
