Tucson Gets it!!

Yep! That's right! Tucson gets it, and after visiting their yesterday, I am so glad to know they can get it.
101.5 JamZ that is! Depending on where you are in Tucson, you can get 101.5 JamZ in the car, and boy was I so glad I was able to.

I had to go help my sister move in Tucson, and we arrived there very close to 12:00pm on Friday and thought "hmmm... I wonder if anybody is going to mix?" Well, 101.5 certainly did not disappoint! The 12:20 Party Mix was bangin!

Then came five o clock... I didn't have the car at that time since I was in my sister's new place assembling stuff, so I could only depend on her home radio. After a few hours of listening to my Zune player earlier, I switched to radio around 4:40pm. As I was preparing to take a nap, I thought to myself "uh oh,it's almost 5 o clock. I wonder who, if anyone, will do anything?" 101.5 JamZ was no longer an option because remember I didn't have the car at that time and did not pick it up in the apartment on the radio. Well, Hot 98.3 did mix! Only problem was my sister's radio could ONLY pick up KRQ! So, I had to connect my Zune player with radio set on Hot 98.3 to a broadcaster and place the broadcaster onto my sister's radio antenna. I see they still love to play "the anthem" by Pitbull every chance they get just like last time I went months ago.... (but I do give them credit since I'd rather hear "the anthem" than Sean Paul's "tempurature" all the time like here in Phoenix uptempo radio mixshows..) Not sure how long the mix was because I did fall asleep. Something tells me it was only 30 minutes. They should be like KKFR here in Az and do 3 hours... or at least 1 hour like KZON!

LATER ON:
9 0 clock is rapidly approaching. Once again, I'm in the car with 101.5 JamZ trying to make it to the car radio, and I'm thinking "hmmm.... well well well.... it's 9 o clock on a FRIDAY NIGHT.." Then 9 o clock hits and Hot 98.3 is NOT mixing and KRQ is OFF THE AIR!! Shortly after, KRQ comes back and they are mixing some mainstream uptempo hits for the first half hour and I'm thinking "hmmm... ok". At this time, I'm back in the apartment without the car, so I can no longer pick 101.5 JamZ to listen to since I can't pick it up in the apartment. As the night went on, I could not understand how KRQ could be broadcasting live from a club playing a bunch of slow tempo 77-90bpm styled hits! It almost seemed like whoever was mixing had an obsession with that tempo because it went on and on for a long time, and the entire 5-7 minutes of each and every song was played in those mixes! The Rihanna "rude boy" tempo does get boring if music is kept at that speed level for too long! Finally 1:30am hits and I'm in the car waiting for everyone to come on so we can leave.

FLASH FORWARD TO TONIGHT:
And I am loving KZZP and the amount of uptempo dance hits and remixes I've already heard there alone so far since I started listening at 9:30pm! (It's 11:11pm right now...) This does not even include Power 98.3 and 101.5 JamZ. Boy am I glad to live in Phoenix because Phoenix is the place to be if you love rhythmic hits and mixshows. As of right now, SIX STATIONS that I know of are currently in the mix!!

KZON
KAJM
KZZP
KVIB
KNRJ
KKFR

Modern and old school hip hop, booty bass, freestyle, pop, reggaeton, and other forms of club dance - We got it in Phoenix!
As far as 101.5, yes, Tucson gets it! However, I should rather say that overall, PHOENIX gets it! There was once a time when Tucson was doing better than us (rhythmic & top 40 radio-wise), but that pendulum has now swung drastically into the opposite direction! Even KAJM, our rhythmic oldies (old school & r&b) mixes until 3am tonight! Where else would you get that?

I love Phoenix!
PHOENIX GETS IT! Phoenix gets it ALL! ;D

I don't know how much Tucson has changed since I moved from there (in February), but KRQ usually has a second mix that goes 'til about 3 or 4 am. I ALSO know I've spoken with you about the mixes during the weekend on KXCI 91.3, but you haven't commented about those, so I am to assume you haven't listened to them.

;D

...But seriously though, I searched for that mix and couldn't find it. I didn't remember what station it was on so I just kept scanning every few hours or so for anything that resembled that 91.3 sound you're speaking of. They seem to have a good Newstalk station at 104.1 or 104.3 though, and 92.9 is good as well. I believe I heard part of the second mix on KRQ. It was pretty much the same, just with no talking on it at all.

91.3 is KXCI Community (non-profit) radio. Eclectic format--little o' this, little o' that.
There is no way on earth that 104.1 "The Truth" (ha!) could be considered "good". "Horrible" fits, though...

What the heck is a "mix" show, anyway, and why would anyone over the age of 18 or so want to listen to one?

Radio station still do mixes?back in my early days i never understood why they do that mixing a great song with scratching and drawn out beats from other songs. My coworkers would have it on power 92( i told you earlier yrs) and at 5:00 pm on the dot they would do the mix and it drove me stinking insane.lol Are there any good r&b stations out there that don't play mixes?

That's a pretty ignorant statement. On one hand, you are asking what a "mix" show is, and on the other hand you're wondering why anyone over the age of 18 would want to listen to one? Which is it?

Very ignorant indeed. A tradition Phx Radio has had since the mid 80's dating back to KOPA 100.7, and then KZZP 104.7 took it over in 1986. Of course I'm talking about the Saturday Nite Hot Mix with Dave Rajput. An idea he brought to the valley from Chicago (Hot Mix 5). Ever since then, CHR has never been the same.

Oh come on folks! Notice that I didn't even bother to reply to the question.

I would let the talk radio side of me come out and point out the absurdity in the question and the way in which the question was presented, but decided.... well, simply not to do it.

Wait. I think the big story that nobody's getting here is that someone out there owns a Zune!

Interestingly enough, on last night's episode of Family Guy, they had a script where one business suit dressed man was talking to another business suit dressed man he was a bit irate with at some professional gathering and part of their conversation went like this:

Man 1: ".....Sir could you help me fix my Zune because I'm having problems with it (he reaches in his pocket & pulls out something and looks at it) Oh, wait a minute sir, I'm sorry, but it looks like I have an Ipod - LIKE THE REST OF THE WORLD!"

Then Man #2 (who I guess they were trying to imply owns a Zune player) gets upset, reaching out and starts throwing blows at him, but Man #1 just holds his long arm out with hand wrapped around Man 2's face holding him back from letting any of his fist throwing blows reach him until Man #2 gets tired and falls on the floor.

In other words, I'm beginning to see that if even Family Guy is making fun of it, I may be the "odd one out" with my Zune player, but you can't beat something you've been given for free that not only holds many gb's of music, but also has American and European radio frequency receivers built in! ;D Besides, who knows? I just may be ahead of the times with my Zune media / radio player!

I love my Zune and I love Phoenix! ;D

I've got to make a correction here:

Correction: "WE" arrived very close to 12:00pm, but only I wondered if anyone was going to mix. No one else cared what the radio stations were doing or even cared that there were radio stations present to begin with.

Care to elaborate? I don't think they run advertising, do they? Other than the "help us stay on the air by giving us money" type of thing.

...they beg on-the-air for businesses to buy what's specifically called "advertising" in the live copy. I read several of these things on the air when I was there earlier this year. Their "community" commitment is a joke (their only locally-originated news or public affairs programming is stuck in a three-hour Sunday afternoon ghetto, with the only weekday "news" being Democracy Now! and Jim Hightower -- originating in New York City and Austin TX, respectively)...
