Tucson Mornings on the Radio

Yawn...

http://azstarnet.com/article_e3f28211-ad11-5824-a94f-cfe0f6e185a7.html

"Another Arbitron ratings book, another victory for KRQQ (93.7-FM)'s "Johnjay and Rich." The Phoenix-based morning talk show earned a 12.9 share in the winter (October through November) Arbitron ratings book, smashing competition in the 25-54 demographic, which is prized by advertisers.

"The Bobby Rich Morning Mix" (KMXZ, 94.9 FM) placed a distant second with a 9.4 rating, KIIM (99.5-FM)'s "Max, Shannon and Porkchop" was third at 8.9 and KLPX (96.1-FM)'s "The Frank Show" was fourth at 7.1."

Discuss why a program like JJ&R carries the mail for Tucson.

Good grief! People in Tucson are complaining about mornings, too? I say the entire United States just let go of morning shows, period.

If a significant percentage of the population can't be entertained during those 15-60 minutes called commute time, why bother putting on a 'show' of any type?

Exhibit A: 96.1 between 6:05 and 6:25 yesterday.

Was that train wreck really on-air??

Morning shows are a bitch. One really has to love the gig and be able to present that on the air. If you live it, breath it, and spend almost every waking hour thinking about it, your show will be a great one. It must be well supported by sales and mgmnt too. Talent, of course, must be with the team that is involved. One also must know one's audience.... do they want music, or do they want funny bits and mostly talk? The good shows mix both and know when to not push it when the conversation or subject is going no place. That is (or should be) guided by a good producer, PD, and the morning guy "driving" the show. The problem these days seems to be a lack of talent not in on-air, but in program directing.

I should also add the the "show" must know, or relate, to the demo for that station. The Frank show was perfect for KFMA with it's younger audience, but will it succeed with the upper demo of KLPX?

Also from that article:

"Steve Groesbeck, general manager of Arizona Lotus, said "The Frank Show," hosted by Frank Brinsley, which shifted to KLPX last year after several years on KFMA 92.1-FM, has momentum that he expects to continue. KLPX was 10th in the spring 2010 ratings book, then sixth in the summer and fall books, the Frank Show's first two with the station.
"I think it will continue to grow. We're right on target with what our expectations were," Groesbeck said. "I think he can still move up. Frank is really talented and he's got a really good show."
Groesbeck is still on the hunt for a host to replace "The Frank Show" on KFMA. He says he's interviewing candidates from around the country and wants to select the replacement by the end of February."

Perhaps that's the issue. I am in the upper demo - in fact, I've been listening to it since it went on the air back in 1976. I also fully understand the need for that younger demo of listener, yet if they refuse to expand oir change the format...there's really no need for Frank to show his obvious disdain for the music catalog, the 'old guy' derogatory listener comments, or anything else.

If the music doesn't change, neither will the demographic.

July 4, 1979, actually, as KTKT-FM. The call letter change to KLPX came a few years later.

"In 1983, Sandusky sold KWFM to Dennis Behan. The station was combined with KCEE - 790, at the studio site on Silverbell and then sold to American Media in 1986. This was interesting on several levels. KCEE had sold off its original FM to Lotus a few years before, with KCEE-FM (96.1) becoming KLPX. Additionally, the KWFM format was "tamed" by its new owners. Hardcore rock listeners had their choices reduced a bit. However, KLPX continued to program a consistent format of harder-edged rock music, and its deeply loyal audience grew. Here is a look at the KLPX Control Room as it appeared in 1983."

You're right on the '79 date for 'LPX; though they were programming similar Top-40, IIRC even earlier on the same frequency as KTKT-FM.
