Tucson Shooting/horrible Vegas coverage

Having been a former Arizonan living in Henderson, I can't believe how radio stations handled this HUGE story.

1) All of the cable channels brought in their top talent, so it was a big national story!

2) KDWN did have it on their news, but went back to their infomercials. Obviously KDOX isn't in format anymore.

3) Most embarrassing was the "News Leader" KXNT. They went from the real estate paid show, to the gold show infomercial, to pre-taped PSA show from Reno. At 2pm their paid lawyer show talked about it and had JD Hayworth on for a few minutes, but that was it. 4 hours after the shooting before even a mention of this! There was even some <excuse me> really old sounding guy stumbling through a local newscast with NO mention of what was happening in our neighboring state (a club going bankrupt is more important!?!?!). Even KFI was covering the shooting live!

I have to wonder what has happened to KXNT. They keep claiming they are the news leader, but they never seem to deliver. I remember when I first moved here (2.5 years ago), they had local news all day (and a pretty good line-up). Then they got rid of local news after Rush, and now there is some clown back in the afternoon.

What happened to N-T in this market! And God forbid, what happens if there is a breaking story here!

The problem with Vegas is it's a cheap market. Nobody wants to pay. They are happy with all the "washed up" has been talent, formatics, imaging, etc. There is nothing compelling about Las Vegas radio. The larger companies have cut and cut and cut some more. Jocks have rolled over and let these dumb programmers come in with their stupid ideas of "light tight and bright" or "traffic and weather together" in the age of the internet and cel phones. Any information a person wants or desires is at their figertips at anytime throughout the day. There is nothing compelling about Vegas radio!

KXNT is trying to maintain its heritage status and it's not working. Add that with a bad programmer and you have disaster.

KDWN is owned by Beasley enough said.

KMZQ doesn't even show up in a scan of your radio.

KNUU is a joke.

There is no news station in Las Vegas or News leader because there is no staff at any of these stations. If you want to be a news/talk station then be one. But do it right or don't do it at all. It costs a lot of money to be a N/T. You need a local morning show and local afternoon show. Then you need a full-time news staff. We are talking 8 to 10 reporters and 8 or 9 anchors. Until someone steps foward and decides to do that then there is no news talker in this town.

GUYS! I'm tired of hearing about how bad our News/Talk stations are here in Vegas.

When you add up the shares of ALL of the New/Talk/Sports stations in Las Vegas (KNPR-KDWN-KBAD-KXNT FM/AM-KNVV-KENO-KDOX-KLAV-KMZQ), even leaving in KDOX before it became Oldies and leaving in non-commercial NPR, is comes to less than 6 shares in the P25-54 demo!!!

KKLZ alone has a large share advantage over all of the News/Talk/Sports combined! In fact, the top 3 stations have more shares alone than all of the News/Talk/Sports stations combined.

So, I guess the question is; why would CBS, Beasley OR ANYONE spend more money on KDWN or KXNT to improve the product? There is very little PPM audience for News/Talk in Vegas! We don't have a sports franchise, we don't have intensely bad traffic and we don't have a highly educated population. You can't compare New York, Chicago, SF, etc News/Talk stations with Vegas' as there is a huge market for the format in those markets. You can't expect the same level of talent and the same quality product. Considering the resources our News/Talk/Sports have to work with, I think they sounds pretty good.

I am a news/talk fan, and have been in the biz, so yes I am interested.

While 720 ran the President-memorial service Wednesday afternoon on air, KXNT had Allan Stock interviewing some newspaper reporter. It's like the shooting never happened!

I don't think it's about how many people they have in their newsroom....840 (and 100.5) just don't seem to care!
