Tuesday Evening CBC And CTV Network Newscasts

Both CBC and CTV have streaming video of their nightly news programs available on their websites (posted shortly after they are broadcast to the East Coast), so I had a chance to review their newscasts on Tuesday night (August 2nd), both programs broadcast just hours after the Toronto plane crash.

This was one case where CBC's having an hour of evening news was an advantage. CBC's "National" was able to devote the first 34 minutes of their newscast to the plane crash at Pearson Airport. There was plenty of time for in-depth coverage.

By contrast, CTV's newscast (which was anchored by Tom Clark; I suspect Lloyd Robertson was either off on vacation or away on overseas assignment and unable to return to Toronto in-time to anchor the news) devoted nine minutes at the beginning of the newscast and a couple of minutes at the end to the crash.

Of course, CTV's network newscast airs at 11 P.M. (in most time zones), followed by local news at 11:30, so that may have been a major reason why CTV was unable to expand their late-evening network newscast. But still, I think CTV could have devoted a few more minutes to the "Miracle Of Flight 358" that they actually did.

I suspect that both CBC's "The National" and CTV's "CTV News" last night drew many more viewers than they usually do.
