Tulsa question

For personal reasons, I am considering a move to the Tulsa area...if I were to apply to either Cox or Journal, what are the pluses and minuses for each? Pay, atmosphere, what it's like to be a jock, what it's like to be management, etc.

Any information would be helpful. Thanks!
 
Cox is a winner on most counts. I loved it there. Pay, atmosphere and management style were good.

I worked for Clear Channel, Tulsa for a few months in the late '90s. Wasn't a fan then. Pay was average. Not sure of the atmosphere now. I've heard it's gotten a little better.

Hit up the management at KXOJ 100.9. kxoj.com Good place to work and above average pay. I've worked there twice.

Nightaire, maybe you can provide some info on what it's like at Shamrock.

Renda is a good atmosphere. I understand the pay is a little low comparatively. I don't know this first hand. But I've heard it from several.

I have limited info on Journal. I've got a buddy who's been there for like 15 years at Creative Services Director. Must not be a bad place if he's stuck around that long.

Don't know squat about Perry.

Am I missing anybody? Probably.

Wabbit-
Shoot for Cox in Tulsa. Better pay, better promotions, great talent, management typical of the "new" radio, however their OPs Director is a seasoned professional who has helped a lot of people down the pike. He knows and understand's old radio and while he commiserates with the death throws of personality radio, he runs a tight ship. Keeps things sounding consistent. They have a terrific engineering staff that maintains Tulsa's best overall air sound bar none. In Tulsa it's Cox.
Question....why not shoot for Dallas? If you're good enough for Tulsa, you're probably good enough for Big D. Go for it kid.

I agree about Cox Radio. I have several friends who work there & they love it. I would like to make my way back to the Tulsa market someday & the company that would be the most appealing is Cox. Good luck!!!
 
Thanks all for the great replies....I appreciate all the input. Also nice to have several helpful replies without any immature, "less than helpful" replies (if you know what I mean). If this is representative of the radio community in OK, it gives me one more reason to make the move.

As for the person who asked "Why Tulsa, why not Dallas?", like I said, the move is for personal reasons, not necessarily professional, although I would like it to be a decent professional move as well.

Hardly. He just came to town with an axe, hired an incredibly inexperienced pd and then.......he and his mini-me were gone. When Shamrock is through with him......he'll be gone again. Great pd's like Jeff Couch and Steve Hunter and od's like Dave Block are who surrounded themselves with great talent and made those cookie cutters sound great!
 
Jeff is one of the best out there. Dave and Jeff are so stikingly similar its amazing. I had the privilege of meeting Dave Block while helping out their chief engineer for a week several years back when Dave was still at Journal. I had to keep reminding myself to call him Dave and not Cooch! Both of them are super nice and fun to work with, and most importantly know their stuff! Steve seems to have done a wonderful job of making someing of Cox Tulsa.
 
PER THOMPSON'S REQUEST: I'm completely impressed with Shamrock. It's a smaller staff but not overstretched like some of the bigger boys, they're passionate about the stations & the income. You'll find a number of people previously from Cox (especially sales staff, interestingly) landing at Shamrock, & they seem universally happy about the move!

Promotions are increasing, sales are up (in a down economy, no less!), numbers are up for both stations, the environment is low-stress, the people are friendly and easy to work with, the GM greets you by name every morning...

I'm trying to think of a down side to working for Shamrock... hm... if you're looking to work for the #1 & #2 stations, they aren't that (yet). While there's incredible talent there you don't get to rub noses with some of the legends over at Cox (who might not appreciate you rubbing their noses, come to think of it). If you live west of Yale or south of 71st you'll have to drive farther to Shamrock. Um...

I gotta vote for Shamrock! 8)
 
As far as the legends at Cox go; Mel, Wavy, Hunter, Chuck Stevens and a few others don't like the nose rubbing. But Andy Barber is cool with it. In fact, it was his idea. Nose rubbing Fridays were a great morale booster. Unfortunately Naked Thursdays didn't make the cut.
 
Leave it to Gary...if someone trys to show up naked at work it'll be Gary every time. Imagine how uncomfortable he was when he tried that at KXOJ!!! ;D

That damned Hunter told me Naked Thursdays were off. Now I realize he was just fishing for an excuse not to hire me for that pd gig on Star! I'm so mad I could drive up there naked right now and rip Nina's clothes off! However, in the spirit of good corporate bearing I'll wait until this Thursday. Hopefully he'll be in a group meeting when I walk in. All I'll need is the chalkboard. I'll bring my own pointer stick. I'll take that young man down a notch or two and send him home wearing nothing but those exciting brown shoes he wears even in a black suit.

Isn't it weird how just plain BS can lead to a forgotten item? That Walter Brennan pic is like the Lock Ness Monster. Only surfaces once in a blue moon. I seem to remember seeing that floating around at a radio station back in the 70's. Yep, Ol' Grandpa McCoy bouncin' around neked, probably looking for Hassie.

Actually, I forgot the thread. But man you know I'm always up for lunch at a BBQ joint! I seem to remember you enjoyed that lunch we had together. It was fun to catch up on everything that's still good about radio. That of course would be the people that still make it work. I miss all you guys and gals. But I don't wanna do radio ever again.
