Tulsa's Hot New Z104.5 Aircheck (1987)

http://www.blacklightradio.com/z1045spring87.mp3

This link will get you a scoped aircheck of KMYZ-FM, Pryor OK apparently from a weeknight, 9pm, in the spring of 1987 (maybe June). The jock is Keith Greer (Greere?).

The file is 5 & 1/4 minutes long, 3 1/2 MB.

You'll hear:
[Z104.5 top of hour kick off]
Kenny Loggins - Footloose
Genesis - Land Of Confusion
[PSA for Edison HS class of '77 reunion]
The Fabulous Thunderbirds - Tough Enuff
Lou Graham - Midnight Blue
REO Speedwagon - That Ain't Love
Lionel Richie - Hello
[Tulsa's Z104.5 jingle]
Huey Lewis & The News - Hip To Be Square
Billy Joel - The Longest Time
[PSA for MS Society]
Expose - Come Go With Me
(TAPE FLIPS)
The Cars - Drive
[stopset: Army / Michelob Classic Dark / personality jingle]
Bruce Hornsby & The Range - Mandolin Rain
Shannon - Give Me Tonight
[Tulsa weather doughnut]
Bangles - Walkin' Down Your Street
Elton John - Nikita

Please remember that this is a 20 year old cassette tape, recorded from FM, of carts, recorded from records. :) also, you'll hear an annoying popping through some of the 'check; that's due to my sluggish computer and not on the original aircheck.

Hopefully this brings back some fun memories.

I also tonight found a CD I think I got at Wal Mart called, "CRANK THAT PUPPY UP! Best Of The Z Volume 1." It includes in-studio performances and birthday wakeup calls. If you're interested in that I'll find a different host 9I can't handle too much bandwidth!) and post the tracks for you.

Gene,

What a great contribution to a bunch of us Tulsa radio guys. Mucho appreciado, Amigo.

Throw those best of trax up. I wanna hear them too.

I can't get it to open either.. hmmm..

I'd be glad to put them up on my ftp if you'd like..

:)

Crank that puppy UP!.. The Hot New Z 104.5!!

OK, I apologize guys, it looks like my provider for some reason or somehow has shut down the availability of this file through standard http... and I'm NOT giving you my ftp password, sorry. ;D

I did rescue the file from the server, so if somebody could take it as an e-mail attachment and then post it that would work, or I'll find one of these free services to post it on.

SORRY! :(

Great stuff. I've only gotten a chance to listen to the first file. But it's great to hear the Z again.

Greer is good on afternoons here.

BUT HE'S DEFINITELY NO WAVY DAVEY!!!!

Wavy will always be the king of Z afternoons in our hearts.

So I'm listening to these. Funny stuff. This birthday prank "3280 dollar door" mentions someone named "Will, The New Guy" sitting in watching Mel work. Must be an intern. Does anyone know who "Will" is and if he made a career of it? I'm curious. It would be hard to work with Mel and not be inspired to make a radio life of it.

Comments - The Ed McMahon bit was great. Ed comments on how "Johnny Carson is gonna come back and do something else in entertainment soon." That never happened, obviously. Cool to see how things develop over time.

I love how Mel, Will and John Walls admit when the Madonna bit isn't going so well...and talk about how it "looked better on paper before we got on the air. " We've all experienced that. You write something...rehearse it...and go to use it and it totally flops.

One more track added this morning: Mr Big Live In Studio Z. With a band involved I figured was a musical performance, but it's an interview with (just for you, BehindTheLines) "Wavy" Davy Michaels. :)

I also have airchecks of (*gulp*) me on The Z, including my very first night on the air there; some of it is pretty embarrassing to me, but it WOULD give you an idea of what The Z sounded like in 1989 & '90... do you guys want me to put up some of that, too?

Glad to bring back some great memories! If interest continues I may add airchecks from KRMG in AM stereo, Johnny Rivers doing weekends on K-107, and some of my 14K/92K airchecks.

BEHINDTHELINES: So Keith Greer is doing afternoons where you are? Very cool! Which station?

Mr. Big!

I can't tell you how many times I parked on the back roads by the lake and did naughty things with the "girl of the week" to the music of Mr. Big, Extreme, all the bands the Z played. The Z was our makeout station. Brings back some good memories.

Hey, Savage! Where's the check of YOU??

Wow.. I'd love to hear some 90s Z... That's when they were the BEST!

If you have any 14/92K I'd dearly love to hear that too... I don't have ANY of that great one. Mel and Wavvy sure were on top of their game on KELi and KMYZ. It's too bad someone doesn't give those two the keys to a station and let them make $$$$$$$ for them.

Mel Myers DOES know what Tulsa listeners want to hear.

Wavvy is absolutely the BEST promo-production guy out there.. period.

;)

OK, I'm also a having a little bit of trouble downloading most of those airchecks from those various stations like Z104.5. What should I do?

I was able to do it easily by using Netscape Navigator. In my opinion, it and Firefox are better browswers than Internet explorer.

I totally agree, and here's something that's pretty handy: if you're running Firefox you never have to use Internet Explorer in the usual sense. For instance, if you run up on situations with sites that still favor IE (sadly, some radio and TV sites): install the Firefox add-on called "IE Tab." It enables the embedded IE engine within Firefox, so you can easily toggle to switch browsers for viewing or listening and then toggle back when you're done. Way cool. Of course, even if it's not your default browser you should keep Internet Explorer's automatic update feature enabled.

Does anyone know whatever happened to Keith Greer?
