Tune In- whats the deal?

As with anything that sounds too good to be true, free streaming!! Their FAQ's are rather sparse, nothing said about royalty payments. Could I expect a certified letter from Sound Exchange someday telling me I own thousands of dollars? What's your experience with them?

Some of the smaller early streaming companies said they would paid the sound exchange fees, but then went ouf of business,,,the stations were still responsible for the fees,,sound exchange didn't care who paid them, but the station is "on the hook" until someone else does.

I was the director of radio at broadcast.com/Yahoo we paid the fees for our affiliates..I know a lot of stations that switched over to other vendors, and later wish they hadn't.

So if someone says they are going to pay fees for you, check to see how financially stable they are

My concern is that they make no mention of royalty payments AT ALL! Not we pay them, you pay them, nothing. Apparently a non-issue to them. And I agree that it would be the station on the hook. I think my original gut feeling about something FREE being too good to be true is valid.

It really is. They are simply a platform. The only difference between them and streaming on your own site is they put your station on their "dial" so to speak. They are the device, but you pay the bills. If you are already streaming, and already paying, this has the potential of bringing your content to a wider audience. That also means more royalties to pay. But placement on their platform is free.

TuneIn isn't a programming provider. They are essentially a web browser for streaming audio. The others, such as IHeart, Pandora, Slacker, et. al. generate original content directly.

All Tune-In does is that it gives people a way to find you and opens you up to new listeners. For stations on a budget people can now listen to you on their mobile devices via the Tune-In App. Plus you are now available on Roku Boxes through the Tune-In Channel. There literally 100's of places where Stations are listed for people to find you, and Tune-In is a really good one. Maybe the best one.

What Tunein excels in streaming technology, they lack in following through with schedule updates... The last time I submitted an updated schedule for my talk station, I swear I must have sent the darn thing nine times over a three week period. Hey, I realize there's thousands of stations on that thing, but they should realize that people who use their app/website shouldn't be fooled by outdated listings.

I don't think that's TuneIn's fault. I believe program listings, formats, songs played, etc. are provided by the streaming station. However, I have noticed issues with TuneIn's rendering of previous station playlists.

I've never had any issues with updates. A couple weeks ago we changed Streaming Servers, and the day after I sent them our update, it was changed in their directory. But I for one will never bitch about a "Free Service". Especially one as valuable as Tune-In.
