I listened to the X last weekend when DX brought it to Huntsville at about the same level it used to come in on 107.7 on a normal day, sounds better, but they played Green Day so I turned it off and put the iPod back on.<P ID="signature">______________

I've been listening some. A few things come to mind.

First, their music selection does seem to have improved. More of a AAA slant, but not completely AAA by any means. All in all, more like the "old" WRAX.

I also like their "shuffle mode" in that it brings back some more obscure tracks from time to time, but do they really need to tell me about it every single time? Just play the song. Also, they like to announce when they're going "nonstop", which involves them segueing directly between a grand total of two songs. Fine, great, but direct segues between songs used to be the norm, up until around the early '90s, I think, when someone decided listeners needed to be reminded of what station they were tuned into between each and every song. People aren't that stupid. Just play the music and ID the station between maybe every third or fourth song. If a listener doesn't like the music to the point that they're going to tune out before they know what station it is, you're not going to get them in a ratings book, anyway, and if a listener likes the station well enough to stay tuned for three songs, they'll hear the ID. I'm listening to a classic alternative Internet stream right now, and they don't ID themselves very often, but I know who they are, and I like the music, especially since less clutter lets them play more of it.

But don't get me wrong, I like the direction WRAX is headed. There are a few things they need to do, still.

1. Give a little more coverage, event-wise, to Tuscaloosa. We aren't chopped liver down here, you know, and the old Z100 did quite well here. They were always visible at concerts and other events, and people noticed.

2. Fix the morning show! Either bring Beaner and Ken back down here, or ditch them entirely and get a local morning show. This stupid syndication arrangement has never worked, and I'd like to know why the agony has been allowed to go on for as long as it has. B&K are funny, but they aren't funny in the current context. Is this a decision made by some retarded bean counter at corporate? I have to think it must be, and someone needs to show that guy the door.
