Turkeys don't fly at WQXI

Rodney Ho has uncover the truth of a radio story. The audio clip at the bottom of the page is a classic.

There is another version, coming from Jay Blackburn (R.I.P.) who was PD at KENR in Houston when it was a highly directional AM trying to compete with much bigger KILT.

Now, to understand the concept, we have to know that wild turkeys in Texas do fly. Not far, not high. But they do pretty nice "flying leap" maneuvers of about a quarter mile... and they fly to nest in trees at night.

So KENR decided they would release a bunch of turkeys over a client shopping center. They bought a bunch of birds, chartered a helicopter and proceeded to drop them to the assembled crowd. The idea was that the short-range flyers would glide down to the parking lot and be captured by listeners.

But farm-bred turkeys do not know how to fly. They fall like bowling balls.

The first one took down the awning in front of a store. The second went through the roof of a parked car. The station ground crew was yelling "stop, stop" into the two-way radio. The aircraft landed, and turkeys were handed out on the ground.
