Turner: CNN focuses too much on perverts

Well there's always CNN International.

True; however, CNN International isn't widely available as CNN is in the US.

Hey Ted,
either get involved in your networks, or shut the heck up. You're irrlevent, and we don't care what you think anymore.

They should, but they won't. And the reasons are simple: (1) such coverage is easy, flashy, and doesn't require experienced, high-dollar reporters, and
(2) it fits the magic formula--sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll. Oh yes, and because inquiring minds want to know.

They are not his networks anymore -- after the AOL/Time Warner merger, he was pushed very quickly out of any actual management position.

Obviously, Ted Turner is not happy with what the current management has done to his baby -- but he isn't in a position to do much about it.

What he really needs is to buy some new media holdings, so that he can get back into a hands on management position with something media related -- it is obviously something that he misses. Maybe he could pick up Pax...

Which is why I have stopped watching cable news, especially CNN!

However:

Perverts = Ratings and Ratings = Ad $$$. So therefore Perverts = Ad $$$.

Additionally, CNN International has very little US news coverage. They will cover big events, but that network focuses on the rest of the world, as that is where it is seen. I think that Ted Turner is saying that he wants CNN to be broadcasting real news, like national politics and international issues, rather than the latest updates in the Michael Jackson trial.

Same here. I'd like to see actual newscasts in primetime instead of documentaries on Newsnight and Anderson Cooper 360.
______________

I have to say I couldn't agree more. Our local Fox Channel WFLD-TV Channel 32 is an O&O. They keep running blips on the lady in Georgia that skipped out on her wedding.

OK is there NOTHING in Chicago that is MORE important than this? I mean I see it as strictly a local issue.

If Turner were in his forties, perhaps it would be worth the battle.

However, it appears that the TV continues to dumb down and would rather
aim for the Garretts of the world...while the rest of us are..in his words,
"irrlevent"

Garrett, thats "irrelevant", buddy.

The sad truth is that running trash news like Michael Jackson updates instead of real news generates higher ratings while being cheap to produce. Also, if a network chooses to delve into serious national and international issues (e.g., the Downing Street memo, the war on terror, Iraq, etc), that network also places itself in the line of fire for criticism and attacks from the right and/or left in this country -- frankly, I think they see celebrity gossip and the like as just being "safer" to run, in addition to being more profitable.

And since the folks that are currently running the major news organizations are not driven by any sort of vision, unlike Ted Turner they will tend to take the easy path.

I Miss Ted Turner

IMHO, "The Mouth Of The South" is a genius. From taking a low powered UHF station in Atlanta, Georgia, putting the signal onto a satellite and telling cable systems nationwide to take it free of charge (at least in the early days of what was then WTGC), to founding the first 24/7 news channel...the man's got a brilliant business acumen.

I'm certain that he still regrets the day that he sold his share of Turner Broadcasting to Time Warner, and wishes he could reverse that action today. It would be wonderful to see Ted get back in the game, although the chances of that happening are rather slim.

Can you tell I admire Ted?
______________

Same here on Fox's O&O WFXT, Ch. 25 in Boston. However, we tend to get more of the self-promo, American Idol garbage, and interviews with the creator of Family Guy during the 10PM news.

WFXT is basically forced to feature local news on their morning show, as they are the only local morning show in the market. Were the FOX 25 Morning News to feature only entertainment news, they would have absolutely no audience; everyone would be watching Today on the local NBC affiliate (7NBC, WHDH-TV).
