TV - 19 Action News

I've read a lot of stuff on here about Cleveland's 19 Action News. Figured I'd throw this out and see what you thought....
I was watching the 4 PM newscast today, and during Sharon's "Buzz" feature, they broke the story about Fox 8's Tim Taylor retiring. She made a comment like "Fox 8 wanted us to wait until 11 to tell you, but we're gonna tell you anyway.." I flip over to Fox 8, and see this big dramatic promo about "Someone at Fox 8 will say goodbye tonight at 10". Funny stuff.
Cleveland Local News is gettin' dirty!

Tim Taylor's Retirement, And 19

> Cleveland Local News is gettin' dirty!

So, THAT'S what that was about!

http://ohiomedia.blogspot.com/2005/11/breaking-news-wjw-fox-8s-tim-taylor.html

Note that in this Mighty Blog of Fun(tm) item, I quote FOX 8 tonight as saying that Taylor's retirement was "such a big piece of news, even the last place station in town tried to cover it!". Heh.

Also in that thing I happen to update...word on 19's new news director.

First it was Murray Stewart and John Ross, then Judd Hambrick, then Robin Swoboda, now Tim Taylor ... how many more anchors is Dick Goddard gonna out last???

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Actually that was Martin Ross, Rather than John..Don't forget Jim Hale and Jeff Maynor. I suspect Tim Taylor might be the last one..

Good catch! My bad - and I forgot about Hale and Maynor!

Dick Goddard Retirement Pool?

> Good catch! My bad - and I forgot about Hale and Maynor!

With Tim Taylor heading out...do we officially open the Dick Goddard Retirement Day Pool?

I mean, yeah, he's outlasted a lot of anchors. But the dean of local TV weather has been working alongside Tim for nearly 30 years. And since he started forecasting the weather on local TV in 1963 (!!)...one wonders when Dick will retire.

Whenever it happens, the hubbub is going to make the fuss over Tim Taylor look like a minor event.

If my math is right, I read somewhere that Goddard was 25 when he came to KYW. That was 1963, or so. That would make him not yet 70 (almost 21 celsius).

Too early to retire, especially if he can still forecast.

There is that...and there's no indication there's a problem with that. At this point in his career, Dick Goddard probably has every single microclimate in Northeast Ohio in his brain.

But...he IS heading into that stage in his life, and could very well decide to retire at some point. This being Dick Goddard, HE makes that call whenever HE wants to leave.

That's right--Goddard will leave when he wants to. No matter what the Plain Dealer may want him to do by putting his domestic issues on the front page. Isn't it enough that the PD killed Joel Rose--do they have to take down Goddard too?

When was the last big newspaper exclusive on the PD's publisher, or its union problems, and its writers or editors lives? Oh, that's right--the daily in a one newspaper town won't investigate itself.

Cowards.

I'm pretty sure Goddard is up into his 70's now.
Perhaps someone can answer for sure...

Yeah, he is at least 72.

Any word on who is gonna take Tim's place? My guess is it will either be Bill Martin or Lou Maglio.

Didn't Wilma and Lou do the 5pm news when they were both on Channel 5?

Alright, what the hell do I know? :)

Just found it. He was noted as being 72 in a news story from 2003.

So, that makes Dick Goddard 75 now (23.88 celsius).

Maybe for a while.

Wilma's Live on Five partner for a long time was the much missed Roy Weissinger.

We Need A Bigger Pool

My thoughts exactly.

What?! You mean Regina Brett telling everyone her life story and that she got pregnant at 21, had to drop out of school and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....sorry nodded off there...doesn't count?! LOL

Let's not forget about Wilma. I have a feeling that we'll see her announce her "retirement" soon as well. Whether it's by her choice or FOX8 not renewing her contract when it's up (whenever that is). Unless there was a renegotiation when her and Tim got bumped to 6pm only.

I thought I heard Tim mention he and Wilma signed two-year deals in '03 to do JUST the 6pm news. Maybe Stacy and Bill will be bumped to 6 and 10pm ... and Lou and (this is gonna sound bad!) "that blonde" (sorry! damn ADD!) will get the 5pm show

Dick will keep going..and going..

Dick Goddard is making way too much money to retire..given the Rankel and Reis Motorcar ads that still pop up on Canton Time Warner Cable, his annual forecasting books, and whatever else he has going on, that's too much income to pass up..

Given that Mike Wallace still does ''60 Minutes'' well into his 80s, Goddard may have another five to 10 years..which means Channel 8 will probably have gone through a couple of more anchor teams..

Is there any other reason for most NEO natives to watch FOX 8, except to see if Dick is still standing?

I'll bet he gets a statue, or the FOX 8 HQ named after him, or something to that effect..once he decides to hang it up..
