Local broadcasting legend Bob Stoldal, who retired last year after a 36-year stint at KLAS-TV Channel 8, the CBS affiliate, has been lured back to work, hired as executive vice president of news at rival NBC affiliate KVBC-TV Channel 3.
Lisa Howfield, Channel 3’s general manager, announced the appointment to the station staff in a meeting earlier today.
Stoldal, who starts his new position Aug. 11, replaces former Channel 3 news director Deborah Clayton, who was fired July 24 after a nearly two-year stint. Assistant news director Kim Sherwood has also been dismissed.
In addition to taking control of a newsroom that has been in disarray lately — battered by layoffs and discontent among the news staff with station management — Stoldal will also oversee statewide news operations for two other stations in the Sunbelt Communications Co. chain, KENV-TV in Elko and KRNV-TV in Reno.
Stoldal has spent five decades in the television industry. “I am determined to take our news to the next level, make it the best you’d ever want to watch,” Howfield said today. “Bob’s just the guy to do that.”
