Nate Wesley said:
Barely qualifies for what the OP wants, but here goes: When it was first put on the air, WPMI-TV (Mobile, AL/Pensacola, FL) stood for 'Pensacola-Mobile Independent'.

It's now with NBC, after another station took its previous Fox affiliation away.

The other station that became the local FOX Broadcasting Company affiliate was WALA-TV (the call letters stand for "We Are Loyal Alabamians", which does not really represent a geographic area, but residents of the area).

Albany, NY:
WNYT - New York Television (NOT New York Troy, even though I think that was the original COL?)
WNYA - New York Albany (recent though...)

With this large list.......would you say at least 25% of the stations would fall into this category?

Given the speed with which this devolved into yet another generic "call letter meanings" thread, then, yes!

Perhaps the more interesting question would be, "what TV stations have callsigns that are exactly the first three letters of their city or market?" It's certainly a shorter list - almost nothing in the northeast qualifies these days, though WPRO-TV and WBUF-TV and WNEW-TV once did, and WROC-TV and WSYR-TV still do. Even if you also accept "first letter of city, two-letter abbreviation of state," that still doesn't add many: WENY-TV, WWNY-TV and WPRI now, WEPA-TV and WHCT back in the day.

How could I forget WOIO-19?

The WOIO calls were used from 1967-72 on the 1060 AM radio station in Canton, Ohio..Should never have gotten rid of them..

I've read in the past that a Massillon, Ohio Construction permit, WMAC-23, was to have meant Massillon-Akron-Canton, but the permit was deleted in 1960..

WBMG (former calls of the present WIAT) channel 42 in (B)ir(M)in(G)ham, Ala.

And, stretching this into third person, the CBS affil in Savannah, Ga. is WTOC -- which stands for (W)elcome (T)o (O)ur (C)ity.
