TV Commercial Trivia Question

How closely do you watch TV commercials? How good is your football knowledge?

Nissan runs what I assume is a national commercial for its Titan pickup trucks in which a couple of guys fast-forward through a football game to get to the truck commercial.

So here's the trivia question: which football teams are playing?

Bonus question: from when is the football footage?

It appears to be some old USFL footage. It shows up a lot when someone needs generic football footage, it must be dirt cheap.

Slightly OT: Who owns the footage of USFL games that has aired on ESPN Classic? Disney? Wonder what Nissan paid for that footage, if it's USFL? For that matter, who owns the rights to various other things United States Football League, 20 years after it folded in federal court?

It is old USFL footage. The teams are the Houston Gamblers and the Tampa Bay Bandits.

ABC had the national TV contract for the USFL. It's likely that ABC owns rights to the video and can sell it for commercial purposes. And since ESPN Classic is owned by ABC, they can probably show old USFL games dirt cheap.

You know your USFL! The game was in Tampa, being outdoors and the fact that both times the teams played, it was in Tampa. They met in 1984 (Houston's first game ever) and again in 1985, the last year that the league played.

Back then, Houston's QB was future NFL Hall-of-Famer Jim Kelly.

And I'm sure the footage is dirt cheap, and because of the league's brief existence over 20 years ago, most people don't remember them.
