Here's the question or situation...

If you were given the opportunity to get your station some TV spots... would you just be happy with the cookie-cutter standard crap that you usually see for radio stations? Or would you fight to get something different on?

I think you should do something that accurately reflects the personality of the station and its City of License. Most people aren't that interested in seeing the jocks (if you have any) on TV. There is usually a reason they are on radio rather than TV. BUT, people are interested in their home town and what is happening in it. If I was going to spend the money on TV production, I'd emphasize the local aspect of my radio station (presumably the more or less same coverage area as the TV station).

Of course, if you are a cookie-cutter radio station with no particular identity, then you might as well use cookie-cutter TV spots as well. At least it would be honest. :D

Boy, I gotta disagree on this one. Cookie cutter spots? Uh, haven't any of us learned anything from our years in radio? To reach a audience you have to be creative and either touch their heart, their mind or their funny bone. Since you would be advertising radio, I think the only way to go would be straight for the funny bone. I also believe listeners are curious about the faceless voices they here on the radio. Even if, most of the time, they are laughing hysterically at our faces. If you're going to spend the money on a TV spot why in the world would you make it boring with a montage of music and your logo, which is apt to change next year, smear across the screen for watchers to ignore. Make it different...make it fun...show the audience what's different about your station.

I don't think we are very apart on this. Make it different if you want to stand out. Avoid the "cookie cutter" image at all cost. It is just wasted money. Maybe you can show localism and humor.

Well, the cookie-cutter spot was exactly what we were facing. It blew us away. Here we are, we get paid to be creative and our management is all about just sticking some cookie-cutter TV spot on for the station. It came down to the fact that this commercial company was going to put together the spot for less then a grand. I said... Can I look and see if we can find someone else who would do it for the same amount of money. I was told... You won't find anyone. Well, less then 1 hour later... We DID find someone who would do it for us AND he has at least 20 years experience in film and TV. Now, the issues we are dealing with are trying to convince our management what funny. They (Management) feel our ideas for the TV spot might be offensive. That we will get heat for it. Which is beyond rediculous. My thinking is... if someone is OFFENDED by the TV spot... then they wouldn't be listening to the station in the first place. We are simply taking our station and showing the TV audience who we are.

I saw some research one time that said the following about TV spots for radio stations:

Who are you, what are you, where are you, and what is your point of difference?
Any spot should include on screen NAME and dial position throughout with mention of said-same at least three times per 30 seconds.
