TV Executives Running out of new ideas

Yet ABC canceled “Defying Gravity" after just three episodes because of the cost
Eight episodes. I was sorry to read there were five more we didn't see.

Okay what about Superman? Oops forgot about Smallville. (Apparently so did most of that show's audience since its debut 9 years ago, according to the ratings).
It's not about Superman. The CW message boards are full of posters who say this Clark Kent will never be Superman. It is truly a different take on the legend.

Eight episodes? Damn! I really was getting into the show too. ABC could have given the ax to a number of shows and left Defying Gravity to run a full season.

As for Smallville; I've read the same postings that Clark Kent will never be known as Superman on that series (even though he now has a shirt with the famous S on it.)

What disappoints me is that when this show first aired it was really good. Now the story lines are just horrible. That show should have been cancelled years ago IMHO.

Millionaire is a game show, not a reality show.

Try telling that to Nickelodeon -- for this year's Kids' Choice Awards this past Spring (as well as the 2008 edition), the nominees for "Favorite Reality Show" category was "America’s Next Top Model", "American Idol", "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?" and "Deal or no Deal" (presumably the NBC version for both 2008 and 2009).

As they say on Sesame Street, "Which of these things is not like the other?" (No doubt the KCAs would consider "Sesame Street" a reality show, based on that segment alone.)

And the Kids Choice Award Nominees for best cable news network: GNN, Pox News...

But then too, with all those Southern California police chases being plastered all over the news, how 'bout a remake of CHiPS or ADAM 12?? I dunno. Sounds like a winner to me. Ditto with DRAGNET (Now that's an oldie!)

CHiPS: CHiPS '99 with Erik Estrada and Larry Wilcox both definitely showing their age.

ADAM-12: Remade in 1989-90 with a new cast. Without Kent McCord and Martin Milner as Reed and Malloy, it was just not the same.

DRAGNET: Four times...First, the 1967-70 series with Jack Webb and Harry Morgan. This version, is sadly, more widely syndicated than the 1951-59 version. Second, as a 1987 theatrical film with Dan Ackyroyd and Tom Hanks. (I felt it to be good, but insulting to Jack Webb and his legacy) Third, as a 1989-90 series that was simply lacking everything that made Dragnet what it was. (this may have been a result of a rumored attempt by Webb to revive Dragnet shortly before his death in 1982) And fourth, as the ill-fated Dick Wolf-produced ABC revival with Ed O' Neill as Joe Friday. (O'Neill did an excellent job at making his version of Friday his own, rather than modeling it after Webb. But in the end, it was done-in by ABC retooling the series and putting more focus on the supporting characters, that and ABC putting the show in a lousy timeslot.)

Heck, any game show (not starring celebs exclusively) could be considered a reality show, since commoners participate. OTOH I've read once or twice in the print media that NFL football is "the ultimate reality show", for reasons I can't fathom.

And these shows aired back-to-back in syndication in most markets. In fact, Arthur (the syndicator) marketed it that way.

Oh, regarding "Defying Gravity": I was not adding three to five to get eight. There were 13, and ABC aired 8.

It's still a damn shame that ABC didn't give this show an opportunity to generate viewers. Yet they will spend money remaking V.

One thing I would like to see is, in a field goal or extra point, the NFL actually freezing the ball in mid-air, with the announcer saying "Will they make this field goal / extra point? We'll find out after this break."

Arthur was actually the producer, with MCA syndicating it to stations.

You'll absolutely see that, but simply with a well-timed cutaway.....once NBC-Universal decides to put some football games on the Weather Channel. Of course, when you return from the barrage of ads with 800 numbers, the field goal will have been made and the kickoff return will be almost over. Judging from the way they've been doing movies, this would be a perfect thing for TWC to try!! ;D

In all seriousness, football has often been compared
to the workplace: a group of people acting in unison,
against time, to accomplish a common goal. Think
about it in relation to your workplace, especially if
you work in an office.

In my personal opinion the only good remade TV show was Battlestar Galactica.

I havent seen that but i think ALL REMADE SHOWS ARE GARBAGE!!

Good TV we remember in the 80s is long gone :(

If memory serves me correctly, wasn't there a remake of "All in the Family" where an African-American family lived at Archie Bunker's old house?

I think John Amos (formally of Good Times) was the star of the show. For the life of me I can't remember the tile of the show, but it didn't last very long.

Just another prime example of "suits" rehashing old shows.

"704 Hauser Street" was the name.

Here's one not mention, "How I Met Your Mother" is more or less a remake of "Friends", look at all the similairities of the two, Friends sharing apartments in NY, they have their hang out one the Central Perk and the other a bar. Dating one and another and so forth.
