TV: FOX Carolina adds 11pm newscast

FOX Carolina (WHNS, 21) is adding an 11pm newscast starting tonight, which will replace its 6:30pm newscast. I'd think they are adding this to capitalize on their morning news and 10pm news, both of which have apparently been very successful for them. Overall, the news will air from 10:00pm-11:30pm.

I gotta say, WHNS has the best news in the Upstate, IMO - I can see them being a threat to the other channels who have local news at 11 compared to the 6:30. Their presentation is so much fresher and more engaging than the other channels, who have just stayed the same for too long.

I have to agree that they have come a long way from when they first started. And definately could pose a threat to the others. The only thing WYFF and WSPA have going for them is the lead-in from whatever programming is in their 10 p.m. slot on a given night. I don't put WLOS in the same group merely because they are much more focused on the Asheville area - and I would imagine that the majority of their viewing audience is coming from there. However, WLOS's 10 p.m. lead-in may be where WHNS can get it's greatest gain since people wanting more of an Upstate focus will flip anyway.

Well,...I spent a few years working in TV, and the main focus was always that damn, ever so saaaaaa--crid...NEWSCAST!
All the TV's run basically just whatever the flyin' fudgecake their networks send down the pipe, and then send their sales staffs out on the street to sell ad time to support...Thee better than theirs...NEWSCAST. Channel 7 has some locally produced fluff, but one of those is only there to allegedly lay a smooth retirement path for Roper. Channel 7 keeps the man happy, but how would they feel if he became 21's...WEATHERMAN? Jack is just like 4's now retired Monte Depuy...Dominately Charismatic.
So, I ask where is the true bravery? 4 & 7 are the ones for SC, while 13 is the coverall for NC. The key is to develope one or a pair of Charismatic, Respectable anchors. It's got to be more substance, than style. "Hawtt" chicks, and moose-haired vampires ain't gonna carry for the long term loyalty. People believe in Cogdill, Goldsmith, Crabtree, and Roper, but the list ain't growing. My weather-pick is John Ces-he's-rich. He has all the points of appeal, and trust. Hey 21,...get a little braver, and blaze a trail. Alotta these TV stars ain't so happy with their paychecks, and who they have to answer to!

Amy Wood is popular in the community, as well, and is probably very trusted along with the others you mentioned. She's been here forever.

I think the talent at WHNS is pretty good, ESPECIALLY for a FOX station. I think Diana Watson is very good (she's been here nearly 10 years, I believe), Trent Butler is not bad either. The morning show I'm not a fan of, but I can see it being popular with younger females. I agree that we seem devoid of fresh news talent - Nigel Robertson at WYFF and Chris Cato at WSPA are pretty good, IMO, and aren't "institutions" like Goldsmith, Cogdill, Wood, Crabtree (and Darcel Grimes, if we want to get in to WLOS), etc. Perhaps they'll move their way up the food chain. I like Jack Roper a lot, and he is very respected in this community - he might like being "semi-retured?" as he currently is. He "endorses" a lot of their advertisers, so that may be a benefit for both sides, as well.

I agree with awp69. WLOS is nearly a non factor in the Upstate as far as news, IMO. They don't even try to get this area with their newscasts, anymore - I heard they don't even have a news bureau in Greenville anymore. I think FOX is so strong here because there aren't 3 strong channels competing for the same area/audience, like in most markets. 21 fills the void left by 13, somewhat. I remember when they started the 10:00 News - it was just Diana Watson and then-weatherman Michael Smith, who is now in Miami. They have come a long way, indeed.

WHNS news is too much infotainment for my taste, and the overall presentation is often somewhat amateurish. WYFF and even WSPA are more professional as the local newscasts of record, with higher standards of journalism. Although the newscasts on 4 can sometimes be a bit bland. And the video quality on 21, as well as 4, is rather poor, as they have not yet upgraded to high definition. Also, put up an outside antenna, and you will receive Charlotte channels including WBTV-3, as well as Upstate stations. Better video quality than cable/sat whose signals are compressed.

WYFF just seems tired to me. Bland is a good description, as well. No doubt that their reporting is very professional, and I have high respect for their anchors, but they really don't have much personality, which I kind of like.

Comparing WSPA and WYFF, WSPA has a better balance of high quality news but some personality, as well. They seem more interactive with the viewers and community. I agree that WHNS is more on the "infotainment" material, especially in the morning.

Fox Carolina has. They used to be a joke in news coverage. Now, they cover the entire area, which the other stations don't do as much, and get good ratings. WLOS reports only big news from SC, and people still complain because they cover SC news (even though they are the ABC for a LARGE part of SC). Their news coverage on Facebook gets a huge amount of views.

They super serve Western NC, and that gets them a lot of ratings. A lot of people I know that live there watch Fox Carolina.
