TV Guide Network acquires "Ugly Betty"

Broadcasting and Cable reports TV Guide Network has acquired exclusive, off-network cable rights to ABC's "Ugly Betty."

I know there's been loads of discussion on here about the eventual demise of the scrolling listings. Has anyone come across any indication of what direction this network is heading in? The article states there's been some other off-network acqusitions taking place in recent months. Is it going to be more of a general entertainment network?

They have already started airing movies...complete with scrolling listings intact! They aired the Michael Jackson memorial service...with scrolling listings intact. They aired the Muchmusic Video Awards from Canada...with scrolling listings intact. In the past during awards preshows, the scrolling listings went bye-bye for a few hours.

What you mentioned is the plan. The listings will go bye-bye for good, and the network will have a new name and new format. They still will keep a lot of the entertainment news programs.

Currently...they are airing the same programs on a repeated loop (currently...almost all Michael Jackson, with some American Idol stuff). This appears to be a "holding pattern" until the relaunch occurs.

They are stupid for dumping the listings... Alot of people dont have any other way to get them!!! (Stupid idiotic company moves)

I don't understand why media companies even dare offer post-2000 network shows to networks without an HD feed (or one in the near future) anymore. TVGN's probably won't be up until 2011 at the earliest (when they get the TVGN branding a distance away), and these days if you offer a current day product in first-run, if you're not in syndication you have to be on a cable network with an HD feed.

If they do have to go in a loop, could they at least cool it with the Jacko coverage? I can't believe he's been dead for almost a month, yet they're still lionising him.

HUH? Who are these loads of people? Most people just go to the internet to check listings now. Or they check in their local newspaper's guide. (if they have one)

Or, if they have digital cable, they use its on-screen guide.

How about people staying in motels?

I spent quite a bit of time on this issue on this site.

I have TiVo now and with some effort I get to the listings. I normally use the newspaper.

Two papers I see at libraries have started sending TV sections only to those who want them. In one case, the library does get it although I doubt they would have asked. In the other case, the paper charges extra and the library doesn't get it, which is a shame because I'd like to see the special features. And I was told they weren't online. The library probably won't pay extra, and being outside the subscription area for that paper, I'd have to pay quite a lot of money.

Maybe the people in the motels know where to find what they want on TV...like the pay-per-view "movies." ;D

That aside, you're harping on one rediculously small segment of the population. If there's a good business model to provide a scrolling program guide just to hotels/motels, someone will find it. We're talking, though, about the general population and the viability of an outdated type of information delivery as a business.

Well, I say every motel should have the package.

Getting back to the original topic, this is a really good show. But the only time it would fit in with the image of the TV Guide Network is when Suzuki is doing his outlandish reports.

Tribune Media Service's Zap2It offers a TV listing service remencent of the old Cable TeleGuide service. I saw it in action a little while back on the Northland cable system in Statesboro, GA. All it had was listings, static picture advertisements, and soft rock music from the digital music service. No moving video...no spoken word audio. The local bulletin board channel was powered by what appeared to be a sister technology...with the same music.
