Does anybody know how KNTV 11 was allowed ABC affiliation Besides the fact it served the Monterey-Salinas Market back in the 50's? It seems like ABC (KGO) or the FCC would have made them move there transmitter from Loma Prieta to Fremont Peak where KSBW was to prevent a large signal overlap with KGO,much like KOVR 13 hade to move off of MT. Diablo to Walnut Grove to become ABC.

It tried to become like KTVU and being in Independent however, when KTVU signed on in '58 and KQED signed on, KNTV was threatened of it's license and as a result, it became the ABC affiliate for Salinas/Monterey/Santa Cruz. Plus I think when KGO was prevelant of it's O&O status and South Bay Viewers (Especially San Jose) got 2 ABC stations, most viewers watched KGO rather than KNTV and that is how KGO came to an agreement with Granite (KNTV's former owners) in July 1999 to force KNTV to cease ABC programming and revert to WB and eventually, NBC. So on Monday, July 3, 2000 KNTV stopped airing ABC programs and aired WB Primetime Programs (Without the Daytime Kids WB since KBWB (Now again KOFY) had the rights to air it. Of course when KRON lost NBC affiliation in 2001/2002, KNTV became an NBC affiliate before going O&O in May, 2002 when NBC purchased it from Granite. So there you have it.

What surprises me is why didn't KGO put up a sister station in the Monterey- salinas market keeping a over the air signal for ABC ,but run different syndicated programming and run KGO news. Even if it was low power.

That could've worked too, but I think it would've been way beyond their means for KGO to put a low-powered TV repeat translator plus at that time, it would've caused financial problems for KGO since their OTA signal can be reached as far as Gilroy and so forth so that's why KNTV was brought in for them. IMO, KNTV had full coverage for those areas as their old location on Loma Prieta could be reached as far as Bradley and Lucia in South Monterey County and Coalinga in Fresno County.

IN the 70's at my parents house in Clovis we put up an antenna and recieved KNTV most of the time,Cable wasn't avalable until 1979. That Loma Pieta site did reach.

Back in the 70's,KNTV was the only station that stayed on all night for me in Clovis, Fresno and Bakersfield stations would go off the air by 2AM.KNTV had there all night movies. I recieved KSBW,KOVR,KXTV and KCRA as well.

Multiple-ownership rules were far stricter; to own a station in the South Bay, ABC would have had to sell a station in some larger market. I suppose they could have put in some translators down there, multiple-ownership rules didn't apply to those. But it would have taken a BUNCH of translators to replicate KNTV's coverage.

The KGO/KNTV situation appears very similar to the WEWS/5 Cleveland-WAKR/49 Akron, Ohio Scenario.

When WAKR 49 came on the air in July 1953 WXEL-9 was srill DuMont/ABC and WEWS 5 was CBS, though they carried a substantial number of ABC shows. In March 1955, WEWS switched to ABC and had a signal that covered Akron like a blanket. However, being that WEWS was not an ABC O&O, they could not force 49 to stop airing ABC shows..Subsequently 49, which became channel 23 in 1967, did'nt stop carrying ABC (As WAKC) till 1996.

I believe that without ABC affiliation and support from a financially strong radio station (WAKR-1590) WAKR/49 would not have survived the mid 1950's.
