TV Land adds...

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition?

How in the blue heck is this "Classic TV"?

First they start running original crappy programming and then they replay the same movie ten times a week and now they add something not really retro?

What's going on here? :'(

i think they got some younger programmer who doesn't know anything about classic tv, they should have shows like perry mason , the untouchables mission impossible, hogans hereos, wild wild west , alias smith and jones , hawaii five o. other shows i can't think of at the moment. maybe some retro commericials and some specials like music, events of the day.

That is a travesty. And, what's up with the movies on Friday night? They aren't even 'classics' that would be enjoyed by TV Land's main viewers!! So many cable networks have gone down the tube in the past 5-10 years. TVL's fall is just more obvious than most. I remember their programming circa 1999 or 2000 and almost every show was a good one. Now, we hardly ever watch. Nick at Nite was once a daily habit for me. That ended long ago. Now they might as well air infomercials.

The only positive note that I can add is that the Discovery Network seems to be back on track; the History Channel is excellent; and, all of the crap seems to have been tossed on TLC. I guess losing TLC is a good deal if you can save the other two.

At least with infomercials, a different one is on every half hour, unlike the Fresh Prince!!!

"TV Land" needs competition, maybe "Retro TV" Network needs to start a cable
channel, i understand they have some classic shows.

These days, it seems like everybody wants to be like FX or USA -- being niche no longer matters.

And we're paying for it each month with our cable bill.

The problem is the perception that anyone over 45 does not spend nearly as much as a 25 year old out there in consumer land so that advertisers don't want to target that age group any more. Viacom (owner of TVL) is business to make money not to cater to the nostalgic feelings of baby boomers.

How about some Father knows Best, classic Dennis The Mennis and don't forget The Donna Reed show now thats classic tv worth watching.

I agree 100% with all of you but I guess it's like when I was a kid and my parents thought my music sucked and that our shows like "Laverne And Shirley" were garbage.

I still remember arguing with mum about the Beatles and the best I ever could get from her was getting her to admit Karen Carpenter could carry a tune.

:)

It's getting to the point that if you want to see
the classics of the '50s, '60s, and early '70s (up
to the time ABC became number one), you have
to go to DVD (TV Land does have M*A*S*H, but
that continued into the '80s). Sorry, but I don't
consider Good Times, The Jeffersons, and What's
Happening!! to be classics on a par with All In The
Family, Mary Tyler Moore, Bob Newhart, or The
Odd Couple. And I somehow suspect that TV Land
would love to get its mitts on Seinfeld and Friends.
Heck, at the rate they're going we'll probably be
seeing the first series of Survivor any day now.

Maybe we should demand American Life or Retro TV
on DirecTV and Dish Network.

Or worse - SCRUBS!

'Hey Horace, ya ever watch that show Scrubs? I don't know, Lois was watching it... Anyway, I was watching it, and I remember thinking... which one's the funny guy?" - Peter Griffin

True, but sadly a lot of those classic TV shows have yet to be relased on DVD
and I have doubts many of them ever will.

Either its due to a legal issue ( such as The Mothers-In-Law with Eve Arden or Car 54 Where Are You ) or bad sales or other unknown reasons ( the Vivian Vance editions of The Lucy Show for example ).

I was at Best Buy the other day and overheard an employee telling a customer who asked about the Jay North/Dennis The Menace series on DVD and was told by the employee "..sorry it wont be available because Jay North wont allow it, the show caused a lot of problems for him, and so forth..." I don't buy that reason though but I am curious at why some shows arent on DVD like David Jennsen's Fugituve( that would sell quite well ) and why some shows like Gimmie A Break, while the first season has been available for some time, whatever happened to the second season? Its only available in Canada and its been avaiable there for some time now but I have yet to hear about when that show's second season will be availble here. Best Buy didnt even know.

David Janssen's The Fugitive is coming to DVD only it is coming in volume sets. Season 1, Volume 1 is coming to DVD on August 14th.

As for the Vivian Vance episodes of The Lucy Show on DVD, only 2 episodes are available in the public domain and those come from the 1st season, the episode where Lucy and Viv install their own shower and the episode where Lucy joins the ladies' volunteer fire department just so that she could sing in the talent show.

How could Jay North possible stop the issuing of "Dennis The Menace?"

Unless they need him to personally promote the videos.

I used to work at a hotel and they had all the actors from old time shows come in and sign autographs. Jay North was the biggest jerk, followed closely by Chip from "My Three Sons."

On the other hand "Mr Roper" and Dana Plato and Todd Bridges were very nice and very polite.

Fortunately, when TV Land (or maybe it was Nick) did run Dennis The Menace a number of years ago, I was able to get a few episodes on VHS. Wish I had a lot more of that, as well as "Car 54" and others. Also when I had my C band dish up, I was able to get shows like "Please Don't Eat The Daisies" on WOR.

Surely we old farts over 50 have enough buying power to support advertising for ONE classic TV channel catering to our tastes! It's a funny thing TV Land, Sci-Fi and others use these older shows to build up an audience, then we're dumped! Even the Game Show Network got started by running B/W episodes of "Password", "To Tell The Truth", "The Price is Right" and other game show classics.

I was going to mention that myself, AlbumOldies. GSN used to have a truckload of the old gameshows that you mentioned. Sure was a nice treat to see Bob Barker with dark hair again. Now, GSN has it's "original" game shows, sprinkled with a couple of ho-hum's from the 80's. I used to watch GSN frequently, now it's just another channel I pass up on the guide.

I dont think TV Land aired the Gale Gordon episodes of Dennis. But then again, those shows ( with all to respect to Gordon ) weren't exactly funny. Some of them were so serious that a few episodes could even be considered dramas.

Car 54 was a great show !! Sadly it is becoming more and more a forgotten show too. Bea Pons who played Gunther Toody's wife on that show ( I heard she is still living ) is actually more known as that wild, nutcase woman in that early 80s grade Z horror flick, Mother's Day. Al Lewis & Fred Gwynne, many people think that the Munsters were the only thing they ever did together even though I believe Car 54 lasted almost if not just as long as the Muntsers did. And what about Charlotte Rae? I have read some of her bios in the past that completely overlook her work on Car 54.

And speaking of Car 54....around the Denver, Colorado area there is a chain of restaurants called "Gunther Toodys". All of the restaurants have this 50's theme ( pics of Elvis, Little Richard, Patsy Cline, old ads, classic cars, oldies coming out of the speakers...etc...).The locations I have been too even have pics on their walls of classic TV shows such as, of course I Love Lucy, Beaver, The Honeymooners, Bonanaza..even the Munsters !!!

But nothing at all about Car 54 !! Lets see...the two cops on the show. Fred Gwynne's character was named "Francis Mulldoon". The Joe Ross character, what was HIS name? I have a hunch the employees at those Denver restaurants dont have a clue.
