TV Market Rank Changes

Nielsen has released their new DMA market rankings for 2008/09.

The top 20 markets have stayed the same. Indianapolis is now top 25.

But the biggest news has to be that Austin is now a top 50 market and Buffalo has fallen out of the top 50 and is now 51. Austin joins Las Vegas and Jacksonville as cities that have become top 50 markets this decade while Buffalo joins Providence and New Orleans as cities that are now below the top 50.

Hartford is still 30.

Other than bragging rights, position doesn't mean much unless you're talking about Top 10, Top 20, Top 25 or Top 50, because advertisers buy time in those blocks. (They buy in other combos too but those 4 are the biggest).

So if you go from #48 to #49 it's not as big a deal as when you go form #50 to 51 and fall out of the Top 50.

I am sure Atlanta will be DMA #7 soon, beating Boston. With the post-subprime slowdown, it may be a year or two though.
