Lubbock TX falls again (but only one spot) despite actually increasing in number of homes. Meaning what?

Nothing, nothing at all. It's all how you look at it.

Bluefield-Buckley-Oak Hill is the big loser... Dropping 5!

You know, Garrett, there really was no need to quote Genius' entire post. :)

I'm guessing that a community was moved from Dayton's DMA to Lima's. While Lima rose 11 places, from #196 to #185, Dayton dropped 4, from #58 to #62.

The funny thing about Lima is that last year it dropped 11 places. Something is odd about all that.

Dallas/Fort Worth moving into the top 5 is a pretty big deal. It's likely to stay there too. The growth in this area is unreal.

Nothing, nothing at all. It's all how you look at it.

What it doea mean of course that although the Lubbock is growing, other markets are growing faster. Lubbock and Salisbury appear to have switched ranks. Lubbock grew by 1200 TV homes, Salisbury grew by 2700. Lubbock is not the only case of this occurring either. Now if there had been a market that had a decrease in numbers yet moved up in rank...

Someone on another TV board I post at explained with Lima there was indeed an anomaly with the data. I don't know if that is the actual case though.

As for Dallas/Fort Worth, I'd say look for it pass Philadelphia in the next few years as long as its growth trend continues. Phoenix appears in a position to take Detroit within the next year or two, and perhaps with the next five years be a top ten market. I will also predict Atlanta moves up again next year or the year after.

I couldn't help but notice that Boston/Worcester fell a spot. I wonder where they'd rank if southern New Hampshire (i.e. Manchester, Concord, Derry and Merrimack) was its own separate market? They have their own ABC now and had a CBS affiliate at one time on channel 21.

Boston moved from #5 to #7 last year.

they'd probably be ranked around where the Boston radio market is (I believe somewhere just outside of the top 10...11th I think?)

Does it tell you anywhere if the market boundaries changed for various markets? I don't know exactly how Nielsen decides it's markets but some I don't think are really accurate. I am talking about including certain counties with certain markets, not the numbers of the markets themselves.

The Excel spreadsheet linked to shows the number of "TV Homes". Basically, these are estimates of how many homes (or individual units in an MDU/apartment) there are within a given market. For radio ratings, Arbitron estimates total population 12 years or older.

Again, these are estimates. The three larger cities mentioned that gained (Atlanta, Dallas/Fort Worth, Phoenix) are going through major growth spurts with all sorts of new construction (Living in the NW suburbs of Atlanta, I can vouch for that). Notice that Markets 5-11 have razor-thin differences in numbers of TV homes, so anything could happen next year.

Why was channel 21 as CBS dropped? And when was this?

I'm just sore from Lubbock TX beating Chandler AZ in the LLWS round robin play. ;)

I wonder if the C.o.o.n. Rapids MN kids spit in their hands before shaking with your team after the game like they did with ours.
(I needed the extra punctuation to bypass the R-I naughty word filter. It thinks the town's name is a racial slur. ::))

Channel 21 in Concord had gone from independent WNHT-TV to a CBS affiliate. I don't think this got past 1989 though. Last I heard, they were a satellite to ION channel 68 of Boston. As for the affiliation being dropped? Maybe the station couldn't compete with then-CBS channel 7 of Boston, lost money and went under? I seem to remember picking up a very weak signal of theirs a couple of times in Old Orchard Beach, ME back in 1987, in the independent days. I know they ran "Too Close For Comfort" at 7 PM. Anyways, here's a link with a bit more info:
