TV News in the Triad

AP reports Sinclair is dumping news on WXLV and WUPN in Winston-Salem. Blamed poor ratings. Didn't figure it had anything to do with poor product!

Arrrrgh...what a bummer for Frank Fraboni. He's such a nice guy to have everything like this happen to him.

Problem is TV news is so damn expensive. I like Frank, too - but their product was very weak! Never liked the national interface - good idea, but poorly executed.

Not to mention the fact that Sinclair had ads everywhere. I mean, for a while, WXLV had their TOH ID as an ad for Carolina Wood Flooring with the station id scrawled at the bottom. And now recently, they've been putting dentist ads in between items in their NewsCentral crawls.

And then ABC 45 running their paid programming or "The Insider" out to full length after sports, often pre-empting parts of the ABC World News Tonight on the weekends? Not to mention the whole pre-empting of Nightline. Sure, ABC may have been (and probably was to a point) politically motivated in reading the names of all the soldiers killed, but for Sinclair to pre-empt it on the basis of partisan politics? Their statement about the issue also struck me as very heavily politically motivated. And not even bothering to show you the current temperature on Good Morning America? How hard is that? Someone in master control could go to weather.gov periodically!

If they have that much disregard for the network news, then how could I ever trust the quality of their "local" news? I think the bigwigs in Maryland set themselves up for failure, and brought a lot of hard-working people down with them.

The ABC 45/ UPN 48 product just looked low rent. WFMY, WGHP, and WXII all have professional, large-city news operations befitting a major metropolitan area. The ABC 45 operation always looked as if it never took news gathering and info disemination seriously. It had zero crediability in the community. It is sad for Frank Fraboni, but ya gotta figure that he will land on his feet somewhere in the market on TV. He's too smooth and professional, and he is tons better than that Mr. Rogers sound-alike Kent Bates. ("Can you say 'Murder'?..I think you can")

ABC really wants their local affiliates to have local news - but XLV has never been able to pull it off. Just too expensive to run a first class TV news operation and the competition is stiff.

Remember the early days of The SuperStation (17 out of Atlanta). They did voice over slide headlines - radio type newscasts at the top of each hour. I always thought that could be a viable alternative for the "also ran" TV stations.

So how long before they shut down their WLFL Raleigh news? It is AWFUL. It only exists as a showcase for Sinclair's neo-nazi political rhetoric. My wife refers to it as "The Ten O'Clock Trailer Trash News".

I wonder... GHP have any room for him? I'd think he'd be a great fit in that building.<P ID="signature">______________

Only one triad station left for Frank...

Unless of course Frank Fraboni left on good terms with Hearst-Argyle. Gannett won't re-hire him and I don't think that Frank would want to work for them again (though if it were different owners he'd probably be delighted to be back on 'FMY).

Since Pappas and Pax don't do news (let alone local), and 'LXI is for the most part a TBN repeater, that leaves Fox's WGHP for Frank to possibly go to. I think however wGHP hasn't been changing around their news people and as a result aren't doing too badly. I don't think that there's a place for Frank at WGHP.

Personally I kinda like the guy though I have never met him. He kind of reminds me of Bruce Parker from the BBC's South Today (I grew up with him doing my local news when I was young back in England). TV stations over here just don't want their anchors (or newsreaders or presenters) to become "establishment" these days.

Neo Nazi rhetoric?

What a juvenile, irresponsible and also TEDIOUS comment to add to this topic.

I love how the liberal elites claim to be for the little guy yet are comfortable throwing around terms like "trailer trash". This is typical yet disturbing behavior.

Come up with some better material, Outsider.

Better material, like the Sinclair Swift Boat "Documentary"???

Sorry, but aside from all the political issues, Sinclair remains one of the worst broadcasters in the industry. No apologies for my previous comments.

Channel 28 had similar problems with pulling off a good quality newscast during their NBC days. I think there were three separate attempts during the 1970s and 1980s which the former WPTF-TV tried to take on the heavyweights (WRAL and WTVD) and lost badly each time. Even though the same company (Durham Life Broadcasting at the time) owned WPTF-AM, a station with a solid news department, it couldn't quite translate its success over to the screen. Its final attempt at TV news is probably what did that company in, allowing Don Curtis to take over the radio stations and leave TV to somebody else.

My guess is that a similar situation exists in the Triad, given that ABC45/UPN48 want to put out a good quality product but have to compete against three well-established stations that constantly battle each other for ratings and prestige. All too often, that scenario leaves the little guy out in the dust.

Same problem in Atlanta where CBS affiliate WGCL/46 has to go
up against WSB/2 (ABC), WAGA/5 (Fox), and WXIA/11 (NBC), three
of the oldest stations in the South. There are plenty of posts
on the Atlanta board about 46's perennial also-ran status.
