TV on Cruise Ships

I recently went on a Carnival cruise to Grand Cayman and Mexico. Each room had a TV, and we were able to get some stations via satellite. The odd thing is that the ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX feeds were all out of Denver. I thought it was strange that they'd pick Denver affiliates for a cruise with passengers from all over the world potentially. Anyone have any idea?

On a side note, I've heard that some hotels in the Cayman Islands have satellite TV and show stations from NYC.

Perhaps they are using a C-band satellite system. All of the Denver stations are uplinked to satellite and are receivable (with subscription) by C-band systems...in addition to the typical local package offered by the smaller digital dish providers. If they were pulling it in via DirectTV or Dish, you'd probably be offered NY or LA channels.

The "Denver 6" is a package of Denver stations that is offered to big dish owners in rural areas where local TV reception is not available - and that's been the case for 20+ years. To this day, cable systems located as much as 500 miles from Denver offer some of these stations to viewers. It's a remnant of the days when much of area of the Mountain Time Zone was not served by local TV.

The use of Denver stations in the Caribbean aren't unheard of -- cable systems in the southern Bahamas have them on their line-up, as they were too to pick up Miami stations. Apparently, they also chose the Denver package, as they were of better quality than the east coast selection (which has ABC and NBC from New York, but CBs from Erie, PA).

That Erie channel is terrible! And, sadly it has been for years. They actually put out a tropical weather forecast at 11 pm ET (great touch) - but it is only 3 minutes long and is then followed by yet another infomercial. The remainder of their broadcast day is amateurish and is filled with crappy drop in ads for things that you need to use an 800# to buy. Makes for really bad viewing.

Who, at the satellite company, is on the take? ??? I mean, why else would this channel be uplinked? It's so very random.

Yeah I was on a Carnival cruise last summer and was surprised to see that all the affiliates were from Denver. When I was in the Bahamas back in 2000 the hotel carried a mix of LA, NYC, and Miami channels.

The satellite the Denver stations are uplinked onare far closer to the Caribbean waters and therefore much better reception. The landlocked hotel can pretty much pick up any signal they want.
