TV programming

It may be said that there is a generation gap with television programing today. The 40 somethings want real shows with something they can enjoy with the kids and alone. 20 it's me's only know reality shows and think everything in life comes easy as a slot on American Idol. The 30 stuck in the middle's are just that undecided where they lie.

This puts TV Networks in charge where ever they see the easy money. Right now the 20 it's me group is where the money is. Like many big bussiness decisions today it's about the quick return and The Street. They fail to look long-term and that is why we get what we got today.

Quality has taken the backseat in America broadcasting look along how many hours a day on local stations are dedicated to Paid Programing. Big money makes investors happy heck it makes me happy too. I just wish TV stations remember what the licence to broadcast means. I think the meaning of the licence is to serve the city they serve.

The MTV effect & the ethic decay of America is also to blame too where we can only look to ourselves for those answers.

I do not work in the bussiness and may sound lost to you

I am no prude, BUT...

There still should be a family hour on prime time television. There is no such thing anymore. Just lame fart jokes and gory procedurals everywhere, unless you are watching a 'reality' show.

The thing is, I'm mid-30s.. I like fart jokes, nudity, gory procedurals, reality shows as much as the next guy.. but my kids (elementary school age) have absolutely no choices.. and before you say, "do your homework!", I'm talking about beyond homework and pre-bedtime. I am not able to watch anything because if they walk in and see gratuitous violence or whatever, then we have to turn off the TV..

I suspect that both truthsayer and MBird are voicing the concerns of the silent majority. Each of you summed up my feelings about the matter quite well. It wasn't all that long ago that I looked forward to the new TV season with anticipation. Now, it gets a yawn from me. I am just past 40 and am being put out to pasture with the Geratol crowd. And, we're still in our child bearing years!

The ironic part is that the 12-35 crowd that the networks are seeking do not tend to watch much TV. The shows that openly pander to this group are fraught with sex, drinking, implied drug use, and a heavy dose of bisexual/**** erotic material. Have any of you watched the stuff on MTV? Wow, it's bad. And that's what they're feeding our high schoolers. Programming from the absolute lowest common denominator. And, I am no tea totaler - but I can tell when I see things that are destructive to society.

But, again, the majority of TV viewers are older than 35. And they are underrepresented by the networks.

The advent of the reality crap has sounded the death knell for good, solid programming. Yes, certain specialty shows on cable networks (i.e., Man vs. Wild, Ice Road Truckers, Deadliest Catch) are really well done and enjoyable. But, those shows are exceptions. Most of the reality shows are devoid of any redeeming value and feature an awful lot of "contestants" who seem to be in dire need to psychological treatment.

Then again, maybe they do reflect society after all. I hope I am wrong....but someone is watching this garbage.
