You should take into consideration that at least 47% of the viewing audience DVR's programs, or catches up via VOD web stream. It isn't fair to assume anymore that just because the scheduled episode overnights wasn't huge, that the final episode was a complete flop.
Appointment-viewing is nice for an overnight ratings buzz, but not a realistic expectation anymore and pretty rare. Networks are more interested in playing the long-game now.

Since I was comparing the results of one program to another, the other program could expect the same additional viewers to watch via DVR thus not changing the relative difference in viewers.
While the Modern Family finale did flop per expectations, God Friended Me delivered winning total viewers against American Idol and handing ABC an embarrassment for the night. CBS really tore it up last night from 7PM on. For the very expensive American Idol to lose could not have been good news for ABC.
Again, time slots make a huge difference for appointment viewing. In the day and age where DVR or streaming is common, many viewers will save or watch season or series finale's for later viewing. Lead-in's are also important. Those already watching a show like 60 Minutes on Sunday, are more likely to stick around for a following show.
My wife used to appointment-watch Survivor Wednesday nights. Now that it's available on Amazon Fire/CBS On Demand, she can watch it when convenient. That doesn't mean one can make the reach that the show is tanking with Women.

Unless there is some evidence that a greater proportion will watch it on a delayed basis than the competing show, it's fair to assume the same proportion will making the comparison of which show had higher ratings unaffected by this.
You cannot assume a consistent proportion of delayed viewership across shows. Consistent results show some shows are considerably better performers in the DVR and on-demand space. Likewise, you cannot make an assumption that the same percentages will happen for the same series under circumstances such as a finale. Believe it or not, these things are actually dynamic. Audiences don’t behave the same way in 2020 that they did years ago.
It’s not remotely reasonable to make that assumption since, wait for it, audiences aren’t the same. That may conflict with how things were in 1974.
Let’s just pick two new shows this season. Stumptown saw a 77% rise when live+3 day ratings are computed. Bless the Harts? 13%. Now, do the math—those gains are very different.
You don’t need to consider it. Facts don’t need you. They exist regardless. That’s what makes them facts.
Kind of like how people who know how media works in 2020 know achieving the best results in three years is a win. But please enlighten us as to your expertise in media.
All that has been asked of you is to provide those facts you insist prove your point.
I'm disappointed about all of this (well, not "Tommy" since I decided against it) but I wanted Carol to have a second act.https://tvline.com/2020/05/06/tommy-cancelled-cbs-season-2/
Unfortunately, Carol's Second Act won't be getting a second season. Tommy is also gone from CBS as is Man With a Plan and Broke.
The cancellation of Man With a Plan surprises me as the show has been pulling in good ratings since its late season debut. It's made the Top 20 for the last several weeks and did decent in the demo.
Tommy never had a chance. Edie Falco is only suited to cable.
