TV Shows that deserved a second chance before being cancelled.

The Black Donnellys. I had seen just enough to be thoroughly confused, and really
wanted to see where they were going to go with this. An Irish Sopranos I assume.

Quark - I really thought there was a market for SciFi Parody/Spoof before this show got
its very quick hook.

The Lone Gunmen - thought this show had potential for real long-term appeal to a quirky
audience out there.

The Mothers-In-Law
Ghost And Mrs. Muir
Nanny And The Professor
Governor And J.J.
My World And Welcome To It
Bosom Buddies
Lotsa Luck
Girl With Something Extra
Baby I'm Back
That's My Mama
Nancy Walker Show
Tony Randall Show
Love, Sidney
Private Benjamin
Harper Valley, PTA

And though it lasted 4 seasons, I would put WKRP In Cincinatti in there as well as it should have lasted longer than 4 seasons and wished CBS hadn't cancelled the show in the way they did shuffling it into different days and times.

Ghost And Mrs. Muir - Edward Murlhare made a career out of replacing Rex Harrison; first in My Fair Lady on Broadway and then in as Captain Gregg.
Governor And J.J. - I was so smitten with Julie Sommars
My World And Welcome To It - Great show. Loved William Windom.
Bosom Buddies - Had it lasted, might have kept Tom Hanks from being coming a movie star.
Nancy Walker Show - Had it lasted, might have kept Nancy off Rhoda.
Tony Randall Show
Love, Sidney - Two for Tony Randall.
Private Benjamin - Had it lasted, might have kept Lorna Patterson from playing the guitar on airplanes and pulling the IV out of the kid from the Love Boat.
Harper Valley, PTA - I still dream of Jeannie.

Or at the least, delay it a few years.

On the other hand, if the series was more successful, it would have kept Peter Scolari from "Newhart".

Commander in Chief- Starring Gena Davis
Jericho

Feel free to add more.

Kolchak: The Night Stalker (one year, great show)
The Patty Duke Show (should have gone color in '66, UA would not pay the extra $10,000 for each color episode)
McHale's Navy (still had good ratings, if only it went color in '66)

"Lou Grant" (Ed Asner and Nancy Marchand)

Lou Grant did get five seasons (114 episodes). That sounds like way beyond deserving a "second chance."
The ratings did slip at the end. The producers had tinkered (no pun intended) with the show and the results were not an improvement. Still it might have been renewed had not Asner let his ego get in the way of his better judgement and gone on a self-righteous political jag. He may have felt better but he put the entire cast and crew out of work.

IIRC , Kimberly Clark (Kleenex etc) objected to Asner's political activities in trying to save the rain forest and pressured CBS to either have Asner simmer down or cancel the show. Asner did not concede to keeping quiet about his opinions of Kimberly-Clark (as well as other companies) "farming" the rain forests. So......... goodbye Lou Grant!

Another theory I've heard is that CBS was seeking a younger demographic and that Lou Grant's audience was an older audience, which is also rumored to have done in "Murder She Wrote" even though it also ran many seasons, CBS canned it (Murder She Wrote), while retaining lower rated shows.
FWIW; Some friends in the newspaper industry say the show was pretty true to life as far as the internal operations and office politics of many daily papers.

Personally, I don't watch all that much TV, but the shows I watch are based on the content of the show and not what the actors and actresses do off the set. I realize that many people don't share that view.

The Lazarus Man, 1996, starring Robert Urich. Cancelled when star Robert Urich became ill with cancer although Urich lived until 2002.

Midnight Caller, NBC, 1988-1991. "Goodnight America, wherever you are."

Zorro
The Mickey Mouse Club

Both cancelled because of squabbles between Uncle Walt and ABC's then management. The Disney Company has had its revenge, however.

I used to enjoy Midnight Caller, but had it continued, Gary Cole might not have been able to play his hilarious role as the boss in the movie, Office Space. Could anyone else have requested a cover sheet for the TPS Report any better? ;)

The Flash.

I thought that show had potential. Hell "Batman" was on for more than one season and that had to be one of the campiest shows ever made for TV. At least "The Flash" was action-packed and more dramatic.
