TV sounds on portables once analog is shut off.

Does anyone know if there are any new portable radios on the market that would be able to pick up digial TV sound like some do currently? I like listening to the TV on my walkman when I am out sometimes. My guess is they would be too big to carry around..

They wouldn't be too large. The question is...are they going to be manufactured?

Size wouldn't be a problem, but power consumption would be. Current digital TV decoding chips are fairly power hungry, and will go through a battery pretty fast. And the problem is that you aren't going to save a lot of power by eliminating that portion of the circuitry dedicated to decoding the MPEG-2 video and making an audio only device.

The other issue right now would be cost -- the digital TV decoding chip would be a signficant expense considering the low price point that most radios sell for today. How many people would be willing to pay $99 for a TV-band radio?

With such a loss of portability, this digital tv thing feels like a huge step backwards.
Now I have to throw away my bw Waltchman handheld, and there's no replacement

Just make up a little carrying bag with room for a battery pack and a tiny DC-operated converter box, along with the TV. The DISH/Echostar converter is tiny, and (IIRC) needs 5 VDC.

I wonder how hard it would be to allow TV stations to squeeze somewhere in on the AM dial just the audio portion of their signal?

That's pretty funny :D
