TV Station Gets Flak For Interrupting "Jeopardy!" Rerun With Storm Updates

Storm coverage...short, sweet and to the point. ;D

Maybe if it's a storm system that only yield severe storms that only produced hail or minor wind damage. However, if it involves tornadoes then it is a threat to life and should taken as such. Short and sweet is irrelevant if somebody's life is saved because of storm coverage.

Today, we had more storm coverage, and channel 5 has rescheduled the airing of today's episode of Ellen to overnight hours, weather permitting, of course. This is the only time (that I can recall, anyway) that anyone has ever bothered to reschedule a syndicated program that was originally interrupted for weather coverage.
Channel 4 has done that with Oprah several times.
They may be doing that again, since they are having to interrupt her again for more storm coverage.

... I can tell you from experience it's no laughing matter... I remember one Sunday in 1973 when a tornado came through our section of Birmingham... It's times like those when some of us don't care if "Jeopardy!" (or whatever regularly-scheduled program is on) gets pre-empted.

I would probably vouch that anyone in Alabama did not particularly care for Alex Trebek yesterday.

I cared when WALA-TV's local newscast ended about a minute after 6:00 PM, when the station usually starts broadcasting "Jeopardy!" Monday through Friday, due to the station focusing on the stormy weather in areas of Alabama outside of the designated market area (Mobile-Pensacola). "Jeopardy!" was all ready in progress after the newscast. The last time one of their newscasts ended late was on the anniversary of the fire at the Deep Water Horizon oil dig.

Instead of TV stations interfering with regular programming other than local newscasts for special weather reports, why not have them on digital sub-channels dedicated to weather or have them during commercial breaks before the weather gets worse? Local cable TV systems and satellite TV companies providing the local weather programming from the sub-channels would be very helpful for both the TV stations and their viewers and listeners.

And after seeing the damage caused, I have a feeling that most Alabama media outlets will be pre-empting all programming for days to come, including the Royal Wedding tomorrow. And what's pre-empted on these stations should be pre-empted permanently.

As for newspapers in Alabama, I won't be surprised if the royals get only a column inside the main section, if at all.

The satellite companies don't carry any subchannels unless they carry major networks, so all satellite customers would miss out on the weather. Cable, well, they bury those channels up in digital cable somewhere, so only those with digital cable can see it and even then only if they can find it.

Cable TV systems in the United States are required to end their analog services by February 17th, 2012. More cable TV customers should have access to local weather programming from digital sub-channels by that date.

Not quite. Cable operators are required to provide service to analog televisions until next year, whether with an outboard box or by simply keeping the analog system in place. There is no end of service date for analog cable TV, and there probably will not be one.

By the way, my local cable company is digital, and the subchannels are part of a higher tier than what used to be called "extended basic."

I agree that stations should focus on storms within their own coverage area, not those in other areas of a state.

I like the idea of using subchannels for weather coverage, and I suggested that on another thread. TV stations here in the Nashville area have done that, and they have also tried to limit their interruptions, when possible, to commercial breaks. They have been doing that for several years now.

Meanwhile... "Hide your kids, hide your wife": WAFF/Huntsville's radar was dismantled due to the storm!

(Not to make light of the situation, but ever since that "rapist in my sister's bed" news report from WAFF went viral, that is the first thing that will come to mind whenever I see a reference to WAFF.)

Didn't Prince Charles and Dutchess of Cornwall get criticized in 2005 for pre-empting the Pope's John Paul furneral and Pope Benedicts papal election or was this just CNN and Fox News switching stories?

I believe the demolished building on the right was a church.

I guess that means WHNT will be only one with a station-owned doppler radar in the Huntsville market for the time being.

It sounds like here in DFW. People get pissed off when you interrupt Judge Judy on KDFW-TV.

Re: TV Station Gets Flak For Interrupting "Jeopardy!" Rerun With Storm Updates

Several people have already said that the continuing storm coverage of WSB
(and other Atlanta stations) saved their lives. When they tell you something
150 MPH will be in your area in 5 minutes..........you take action.

Re: TV Station Gets Flak For Interrupting "Jeopardy!" Rerun With Storm Updates

This isn't related except because it's about "Jeopardy", but last night the networks went over with their 6:30 newscasts. I live where with an antenna I can watch at 7:30, and it just happens the cable company has that station too. But the only "Jeopardy" station my cable company is required to provide airs the show at 7. Fortunatley for those stuck with just that station, it was a tournament and the re-air those.
