Just a quick note:

WBZ in Boston hardly mentions its call letters. I didn't realise it was WBZ until after I was up here for a month. They go by CBS 4. Do the call letters really matter anymore? Should stations ignore their historical calls and go by something else, like CBS 4?

Sorry to steal the thread a bit.

The definitive list...

...of everything having to do with three-letter calls is here:

Meticulously researched and totally up-to-date. And check out the rest of Thomas' site while you're there, too!
______________

You forgot WJM in Minneapolis/ St. Paul, home of Ted Baxter, Lou Grant, Murray Slaughter and Mary Richards. LOL.

The calls aren't just historical, they're required by law. They only have to air them as close as possible to the top of the hour in a natural programming break. This means all they have to do is flash on screen "WBZTV/DT Boston" in a tiny font, for a few seconds.

Its called a legal ID, for more info on what they are and why we air them, go to http://www.tophour.net

Also, WKS in Columbus, OH, where Steven Keaton of Family Ties
worked.

But back to the topic:

I didn't catch whether or not the website mentioned former
three-letter TV station calls, but a few that come to mind:

KHJ/9 Los Angeles (now KCAL)
WOR/9 New York (now WWOR)
KOA/4 Denver (now KCNC)
KLZ/7 Denver (now KMGH)
WOW/6 Omaha (now WOWT)
WKY/4 Oklahoma City (now KFOR)
KID/3 Idaho Falls/Pocatello, ID (now KIDK)
WGR/2 Buffalo (now WGRZ)
WSM/4 Nashville (now WSMV)
KMJ/24 Fresno, CA (now KSEE)
WJZ/7 New York (the original WJZ, now WABC)
WMT/2 Cedar Rapids/Waterloo, IA (now KGAN)

WDIV/4 Detroit is the ORIGINAL WWJ. WJW/8 in Cleveland
changed its call letters to WJKW in the late '70s, but
later changed them back.

Back in the early '50s there were a couple of shared-time stations with 3 letter calls:

WHB-TV 9 Kansas City, MO (merged with KMBC-TV in 1954)
KOY-TV 10 Phoenix, AZ (merged with KOOL-TV in 1954, now KSAZ-TV)

Also CMQ Ch 6 in Havana (at least before the Cuban Revolution)

WOC-TV 6 in Davenport, IA (became KWQC TV in 1986)

KYW in Philadelphia used to go by KYW 3. Now They simply go by CBS 3. Hardly any mention of the call letters.

Re: The definitive list...

In St. Louis, KSD-TV Channel 5, which became KSDK in 1979 when they were sold to Metromedia, and seperated from KSD radio (Calls still at 93.7 FM).

In the 50s, I believe it was pre 1956? Channel 4 was KWK-TV before being sold to CBS and becoming KMOX-TV (Now KMOV).

Do you all think ...

... we could refrain from repeating call letters that were included in the list at the website Scott Fybush posted?
______________

Re: (There aren't any) TV Stations with three letter calls

Technically, NONE of these are three-letter calls, since they have "TV" appended, usually because a connected AM radio station actually has or had the three-letter calls.

An owner could perhaps change the radio station's calls and then drop the "TV" designator on the television station.

Ted.

3-letter calls w/o -TV suffix

The calls cited here have the -TV suffix, but TV stations do exist with 3-letter calls and no suffix:

KGW 8 Portland OR
WJW 8 Cleveland OH
WIS 10 Columbia SC
______________

It's my understanding that in Boston, channel 4 must identify as "WBZ-TV/DT" since you still have WBZ-AM 1030. Viacom owns channel 4 and CBS Radio owns AM 1030.
