TV sub channels

Why doesn't WTVF, WZTV and others have more sub channels. I have noticed both Knoxville and Memphis stations have added a few of the sub channel networks.

WTVF is just concerned at this point with getting back their lost viewership:
they've had problems since their digital moved from temporary channel 56 to 5.
Most stations doing digital on low VHF are having similiar problems...check the Philadelphia and Boston boards.

Newschannel5 has "the plus." (I wish they'd move that off cable! :'( :()

WZTV has sister stations WUXP and WNAB, the latter of which I can't get, although I was able to get them prior to last Friday's changeover. Anyone have any idea why that is? Did they move to another channel? I scanned a couple of times last Friday and over the weekend, but couldn't get them. I manually tuned them in, but after a couple of days of "no signal," I deleted that channel from my lineup.

I now get 'NPT and their subchannel, although I was not able to receive them prior to the changeover.

I also no longer get channels like "The Church Channel" and Qubo, but I never really watched those anyway ::) and the signal was never very good on those channels.

Seems like with all their sister stations, Newschannel5 and Fox 17 really don't need subchannels.

I always had trouble picking them up prior to the changeover. I didn't know about channel 56, but even when I scanned for channels, I never got that one! ???

Nope, none of the Sinclair stations made any changes. Channels 5 and 8 are the only two that did anything last Friday besides turning off the analog transmitters.

That said, at channel 4 we've received a few reports of people losing our signal at transition too. I can't explain that. (my suspicion is they never had our digital in the first place)

Subchannels of 50-1 WPGD/TBN and 28-1 WNPX/ION, neither of which changed anything. (and both of which are on the same tower)

Seems like with all their sister stations, Newschannel5 and Fox 17 really don't need subchannels.

WTVF/5 doesn't have any sister stations...

Romer: I'm finding channel 5 is working out a LOT better for WTVF than I expected. They were problematical on Transition Night but MUCH better since. I think the problem is lightning static. (which means they still have a problem but it isn't nearly as bad as expected) We've heard from a number of viewers on the Plateau who say 5 is the only channel they *can* get.

Of course, I'm not privy to the calls arriving on channel 5's phones...

I saw on channel 5 where the FCC came in to town to try to help some people receive channel 5. Strange that at first the report said that it wasn't channel 5's problem but then it said that it was because of the channel they ended up on. Wonder if the antennas the FCC handed out to the people they were working with were free?

The reception issues around the country will have to be addressed. Seems that they are starting to do this with HD radio.

I consider "the plus" to be a sister station of channel 5. Whether a given channel is a sister station, or a subchannel, or whatever, of a primary channel is playing a game of semantics.

I really wish Newschannel5 would make "the plus" available "over the air," because they really don't have any programming on that channel that is of a "proprietary" nature, nothing exclusive, nothing that should be "paid" for. They use the channel for public service features, news features, talk shows, and rebroadcasts of newscasts, and most importantly, weather information when a storm rolled through while the "over the air" channel 5 was in "March madness." ::) So does this mean that I need to pay for severe weather information that they ought to be giving me for free? No, I just change the channel to one of the other stations that already is giving out this information for free. (I'm not criticizing channel 5 for staying with March madness, only that they ought to offer "the plus" over the air.)

Ah. I think the most commonly used terminology holds a "sister station" is a co-owned station with a separate license but the same owner. An additional program beyond the first on a DTV station is generally called a "subchannel". Which really is a bad idea as it implies this program is somehow technically inferior. (like a subcarrier on a FM station) It isn't; all programs carried on a DTV station are co-equal.

They did offer it on 5-2 for awhile after their DTV went on the air. I've heard rumors as to why they dropped it but never an official explanation. Agreed: I miss it too.

Does channel 2 offer their weather channel over their over the air signal? I was wondering if ther was some leagal thing with channel 5 and the cable systems as to why they don't broadcast plus over the air.

Something people on this board may have not checked out yet; Are any of our channels running the SAP channel or closed captioning over the air? channel 8 did for a long time in analog.

Yep, 2's weather channel and 4's Telemundo Nashville are both available via digital OTA.

Closed captioning is required by law. (and I frequently use it to watch TV while listening to the radio...)

Technically, SAP is gone now that analog TV is gone. But it's possible for a digital TV station to associate more than one audio program with a video program, which is pretty much the same thing. Don't know if anyone actually is - it'd be channel 8 if anyone.

Well the reason channel 5 does not put Newschannel 5 plus over the air is because they have a cozy deal with Comcast. You see Comcast doesn't want anyone to see the plus unless you have cable. They do share with Charter cable but not the satelittle systems or over the air. I find that unbelievable since channel 5 uses the plus at times for weather information or other public information. I think everyone need to write a letter to the GM of channel 5 and the FCC to voice a complaint.

Good news! There are plans to put "the plus" on over the air DTV later this year! Y'all keep writing! :)

There are plans in the works. Hopefully it will happen later this year. Thanks for your interest and keep watching.

Subject: plus on DTV

Are there any plans to offer newschannel5 plus on DTV OTA as a subchannel? It seems to me that this would be the perfect complement to regular newschannel5. Channel 2 has NashvilleWX; channel 4 has Telemundo; Fox 17 has sister stations; even channel 8 has a subchannel. It seems to me that with the weather and information offered on newschannel5 plus, this channel should be offered over the air free of charge. Please consider adding the plus on channel 5.2. Thanks.
