tv theme songs on the radio

The Ballad of Davy Crockett was also performed by Stephen Bishop.

Henry Mancini. It could be heard at the start of Columbo, McMillan and Wife,

Mancini also had the Whats Happening theme as well. For some reason I can remember one of our local AM stations using that theme whenever they did school lunches.

..oh there was the Makin It theme done by Mister Dr. Pepper himself...David Naughton.

How about the Knightrider theme? Heard it on Alex Jones Show. Great instrumental but don't listen to it while you're driving. Might make you speed.

I'm stupid and have never worked in real radio a day in my life. But I'm still in my 30s and have loved all versions of Spinner/AOL Music/Slacker's "TV Tunes" channel. It seems to me that TV themes would seem to be the easiest way to freshen up any oldies station, perhaps to cleanse the palate between artists or genres. In particular, some of the ones that have been mentioned are actually well-crafted songs. There are millennials that probably can't name you a Golden Girl but can recognize "Thank You For Being a Friend".

Not all of them would have a traditional length or the same 'crossover appeal', but familiarity still means something to terrestial radio formats. What's more, there are shows from the 90s up to the 2000s that probably have usable themes.

Or would something like this still skew way too old?

The Hill Street Blues Theme also got some airplay back in the day.

I can remember hearing the opening theme from WKRP being played on Memphis radio at least once. I also remember flipping across the dial and hearing the theme from Taxi on an easy listening station in the 90's or early 2000's.

Yes Don't forget Cool Hand Luke the Tar Sequence! It started out as movie scene with Paul Newman but was also used on the ABC O&O's as a News Theme. the former ABC Radio Stations aired Cool Hand Luke as part of news promo's to tune to their then respective ABC Owned TV Stations at the time.

Mike Post composed and recorded so many themes, he released an album entitled "Television Theme Songs."

The WKRP theme, sung by Steve Carlisle, had a few custom versions recorded for certain radio stations; the custom bit was only at the end.

list from a book

I looked through my copy of The Complete Directory to Prime Time Network TV Shows, 1946-Present, by Tim Brooks and Earle Marsh, copyright 1988. I found these lists in the back of the book of TV themes up through the mid-1980s, so I just scanned them and created jpgs of the pages. If that's against the rules you can delete this post.

How about theme songs to classic Christmas specials? Radio started playing them when the all-Christmas-for-a-whole-month practice caught fire in the early 2000s.

Theme from the original Hawaii 5-0. Also, one of the greatest intro's from any TV show ever made IMHO.
