There is lots and lots of Classic TV up on YouTube. Some you have to rent, but most is still free. And now, playlists and the auto play function have made the following possible: A real-time re-creation of a night in Prime Time Television. For this first one, I decided to go back to the day my local newspaper, The Riverside Press-Enterprise, debuted their own version of TV Guide, TeleVues. The date was September 18, 1960, and there is exactly 3 and 1/2 hours of Classic TV for your enjoyment. This is what I mean by 'real time': You hit the 'Play All' button, say 7:30pm eastern/6:30pm central, it will end precisely at 11pm eastern/10pm central. There was some creative license taken, but for the most part, this is what you saw on TV that September night. And it goes like this:
7:30pm People Are Funny - This was the beginning of the 'rerun' season on NBC. No specific show was mentioned in TeleVues, so I just picked one. It has to do with a Rolls Royce.
8pm The Shirley Temple Show - Brought to you in Living Color On NBC. This was the second season of a show that began as Shirley Temple's Storybook. This one, The Land of Oz is based on a few of the sequel stories to the original. The now grown-up Shirley Temple plays two roles here; a boy named "Tip" and "Princes Ozma". Johnathan Winters, and a pre-Bewitched Agnes Moorehead co-star.
8:55pm National Velvet - Premiere episode of the two-season series, based on the 1944 MGM film. This is actually the 35-minute "sales pitch" version of the pilot show, The Raffle , in which the horse soon to be know as King, is introduced here as "The Pie". The raffle is the title is set up by Velvet Brown (Lori Martin) to help save The Pie from a trip to the glue factory.....and to get his name quickly changed!
9:30pm The Chevy Mystery Show - Second to the last episode while Dinah Shore had the summer off. Vincent Price plays host, and Cesar Romero stars in an adaption of Robert Louis Stevenson's The Suicide Club. Dan Tobin has the villain's role here as a club president who sets up a very deadly card game for the other members. The episode is complete with all commercials and network promos in tact!
10:30pm What's My Line - The Sunday Night CBS Game Show wraps things up. The 'Mystery Guest' is the actor Cantinflas, there to promote Around The World In 80 Days. Joey Bishop is on the panel.
As a bonus, I've added a clip from the KNXT-TV 2 Late Show for that evening, the 1940's version of "Kidnapped" - which can be rented from Warner Archive. And also the "High Flight" film stations used back then the end the broadcast day. And there you have it, 3 1/2 solid hours of TV Goodness! Enjoy!!!
