TV updates from Pensacola

I discovered yesterday that BLAB TV -WFBD-TV 48 has upgraded their equipment and is now broadcasting in full 720P 16x9 HD.
Also, WPAN-TV 53/40 is now multicasting. Same old Infomercials/paid programming on 40.1 with a new infomercial/shopping channel on 40.3 (I've watched but can't determine what infomercial network it is). The interesting addition to WPAN is 40.2... COZI TV with an NBC peacock logo on the screen.

Good information to know. We allegedly-reportedly get WPAN on Riviera Cable but the digital version almost never works. The analog version seems fine, though. I'd love for them to add Cozi to our lineup just to have another channel of old 70s TV shows.

I first noticed BLAB's upgrade when I watched an episode of Blue Lights, which I have become ever so slightly addicted to. It's so low budget and amateur that they miss 90% of the action, but it's still a hoot. Surely the guy who shoots it could spring for a wireless mic pack for his cop partners on the ride-alongs? :D

Is the scrambled version on WHBR also in HD? That would be a pretty costly upgrade for them. Last time I checked, it was blacked out OTA. I get BLAB on Riviera (next to WPAN of course) and in HD. Crazy.

I had been getting BLAB via WFBD in SD only on UVerse with a crazy 4:3 converted to 16:9 converted back to 4:3 format. When I tuned in Saturday afternoon to see the end of the Pensacola Mardi Gras parade I noticed that things had changed and flipped the input over to the rooftop for the first time since College Football season ended.

I do business with BLAB and the folks that run it. They told me 6+ months ago that they were in the process of upgrading to full HD, but I just figured that would be for the local Cox Cable feed and that the upgrade may take 5 years. Guess I need to quit assuming.

One good thing about the move of BLAB from WPAN to WFBD is that WPAN never carried Blue Lights. WPAN cut off the BLAB feed at 10PM to go with home shopping for the overnight.

WPAN was the last channel I expected to add multicasting. They have no pull whatsoever to get sub channels up on cable TV systems and can't even get their signal to most of the Cable head ends in the Mobile-Pensacola DMA. I assume the infomercials are WPAN's bread and butter and they will remain on .1. It be cool to have WPAN back as an indie. My auto AC guy has a big picture on his shop wall of his old race car out at Five Flags Speedway and the car has a circa 1985 WPAN billboard right behind it.

WHBR-TV no longer has a sub-channel for broadcasting programming from BLAB TV over the air.
