TV: WFXW/Terre Haute drops FOX, picks up ABC

Tribune ought to move WTTV transmitter to West of Bloomington to serve TH, combo it with WXIN and brand it FOX4/59. WTTV deserves much more than being what it is, and it's Indy coverage from Trafalger is a moot point these days. 29 can stay CW29. Just a thought.

Very true, especially considering that WTTK now transmits from the tower farm on Indy's northwest side. I'm actually wondering if WTTV will either be sold or become an independent once again in the future.

I thought (maybe incorrectly) that WTTV and WTHI switched channels early on. I remember growing up in Crawford County, IL, that WTTV was the "4th" channel, after 38 came on in '73. Sometimes it was there with snow, or just wasn't. This was with a outside antenna.

Channel 4 was allocated to Terre Haute from 1947 to 1952, but WTHI-TV never occupied that channel. It came on the air on 7/22/1954, after WTTV moved from 10 to 4 in February of that year. I'm guessing that's when the Cloverdale transmitter was activated - I don't think they ever installed a Channel 4 transmitter/antenna in Bloomington.

There was an old tower near Stilesville on US 40 that was taken down a few years ago. Reportedly had rust issues. Was this the tower?

There is a tower near Coatsville but is only 400 feet and was 300 feet until 10 years ago. Old structure type but not 1954 vintage. Currently home to K Love.

I believe that is correct. WTHI TV began in 1954 on channel 10. And the rumors around the station were that WTTV had occupied the channel previous, and that WTHI TV was allocated channel 4. I think there was some kind of objection to putting Ch 4 in Terre Haute by another station elsewhere but within some kind of interference contour (maybe St. Louis). WTHI TV used the tower at 918 Ohio for many years until building the tower at Farmersburg. The 918 tower was then used as a backup site until the 80's, along with WTHI FM. WTHI TV now only occupies the Farmersburg facility. WTHI FM (Emmis) is now the owner of the 918 Tower.

Nice board, by the way!

According to my map, WTTV's Cloverdale tower was along the Owen/Putnam county line, 1 mile east of US 231 and about 3 miles south of the town of Cloverdale. I'm not sure who may have used the tower you mention at Stilesville.

While rummaging through the Old Gringo's Basement, I found these articles from Broadcasting Magazine: Per the 8/29/1955 issue, WTTV applied to move from Cloverdale to Trafalgar (they wanted a 1649 ft tower originally!) at that time. The approval notice was published in the 2/11/1957 issue, but at only 996 ft. All three companies (WIBC, Crosley (WLW), and Midwest TV) that were applying for Channel 13 at the time opposed the move. They lost.

Do you suppose WTWO waiting for their Fox-to-ABC switch to replace Elise Evans? The four guys sitting on the set together can't be a long-term solution, can it? I think they're all good, but not the gender equity that we usually see.

Bummer, I was hoping that our cable company in Brazil would pick up WXIN-59, WTHI will inforce the exclusivetivity and we won't get HD football.

It may be a bummer, but it's better than not having Fox at all. What is definitely wrong with this picture (while off-subject) is that Nexstar has a duopoly in Terre Haute, & there are only 3 commercial stations licensed to the market (5 total with 2 of them allocated for non-commercial use). I don't know how the FCC allowed WTWO to be owned by Nexstar & WFXW (soon will be WAWV) be owned by Nexstar via Mission Broadcasting. Because of that, Nexstar could have kept Fox out of the market had WTHI (owned by LIN Broadcasting) not picked up the affiliation. The FCC needs to force a divesture of one of those stations owned by Nexstar.
