TVLAND and Commercials = Ridiculous

I didn't realize how ridiculous and out of control TVLAND and their commercial breaks were until this past Saturday when I was watching the movie "Beauty Shop" starring Queen Latifah. (I like that movie because I'm a Queen Latifah fan). The movie started at 10:34AM and ran until 1PM!!!! It seemed like they went to a commercial break whenever they felt like it and some of the breaks were way too long. I've watched this movie a few times on other networks - ION and E! and with commercials it aired for 2 hours. In fact when TVLAND reran the movie later on Saturday evening it ran for just 2 hours!

It should be noted that I haven't really been able to watch TVLAND in well over a year because when I was living on my own I only had basic cable. Now that I'm living with Mom again I get TVLAND.

MARC:
Get yourself a Picture in Picture option. With that, you can leave the channel in the smaller box while flipping channels during the TV ads. I do that to check out Weather channel or news updates or whatever.
You'll never miss a thing!!!

A DVR is a more practical choice. Record it ahead of time and fast-forward through the commercials.

Tvland like many other channels went south so I cut the cord. MeTV is a far much better network and few channels.

And too much reality shows like "How did you get so rich?", "Big-40", "High School Reunion", and the grossly "Cougar"

TV-Land used to only play Classic TV, now they become just another Cable channel in wasteland.

When I am recording shows on my DVD Recorder at my Dad's house in San Antonio, I mostly record 12-2 which is Me-TV, or the Hub.

There's a benefit of the doubt though. When TV land "used to only play classic TV" what was their competition? What would be their competition today if they stayed that way? There's only so much "classic" to go around, then there's the rights...

Yes, and there is also the ratings. "Classic" shows just don't pull in the same ratings as originals like Hot in Cleveland or the newer stuff they show.

I'll give them credit for dropping this type of garbage with the exception of Extreme Makeover Home Edition, and it doesn't seem to be on as often. I don't care for their original sitcoms, but I'd rather see them than the reality garbage they had a few years back. I don't mind them showing newer shows like Everybody Loves Raymond and King of Queens, but then I know that's a matter of preference. But I definitely agree that the overloading of ads is totally riduculous.

Spike TV does the same thing. Bar Rescue had a ton of commercials during their marathon a few days ago. Viacom is getting greedy.

http://www.broadcastingcable.com/article/489898-With_Too_Many_Ads_TV_Land_Subtracts_Content.php

Viacom has come under fire lately for cluttering some of its channels with extra commercials in order to make up for advertising revenue shortfalls caused by lower ratings.

But one little-noticed effect of squeezing in more ads is that networks such as TV Land and Nick at Nite are actually running fewer episodes of series in many dayparts, sometimes running only five episodes of sitcoms like King of Queens and George Lopez in a three-hour block rather than the six 30-minute episodes that normally fill a programming grid.

On Monday, Oct. 9 from 11 p.m.-2 a.m. ET, TV Land ran four episodes of King of Queens and one episode of That '70s Show. Each one clocked in at 36 minutes in length. The first episode of King of Queens had three commercial breaks; the first break ran nearly 6 minutes with 15 different commercials, starting with a promo for TV Land's Happily Divorced. The next break was about five and a half minutes, starting off with a bumper (billboard) announcing that "King of Queens is brought to you by Allstate." Spots for 12 other advertisers ran in the break. The last break was 5 minutes long, with 15 spots....

It is not just TV Land but most cable TV networks ( especially Spike and AMC) will butcher a movie by editing it to include jamming in extra commercials.

One day when I was home sick in bed and watching TV, I counted (on AMC) five minutes of the movie and seven minutes of commercials for over three hours. * Note the original movie, according to Wickipedia ran 90 minutes.

The choice is either put up with the added commercials or pull the plug on cable, or get rid of the dish, and subscribe to Netflix and get OTA TV if you want to save money.

though my local affiliate is starting to slip more and more half-hour infomercials into the schedule. :(

USA, or TBS did that with Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory omitting the tunnel scene.

The problem is you need high speed internet service to be able to use Netflix, which in many cases still means cable.

Hi-jacking my own thread. Something that I just noticed not too long ago while flipping through channels is ads popping up at the bottom of the screen (or the side of the screen) during Springer and Maury on WCCT-TV 20 out of Hartford. I don't watch either show, but you got to wonder how long it will be before other stations/networks start doing it.

Blame NBC Universal for those.

Logo, another CBS network, is doing the same thing. They ran a 'Bewitched' marathon Sunday and the breaks were insanely long, causing each episode to run longer than 30 minutes. Not what the on-screen listings showed. Then, the last episode ran only 15 minutes and cutoff midway thru. They just ran the credits abruptly and then started the next program on time. Annoying.

Well, now I've heard everything... That's just silly... I can't believe it... "Bewitched" reruns are airing on Logo now?
