TVO to make cutbacks amid latest budget cuts

And before you know it, they'll start running commercials between the programs.

Not at all likely. They'll just boost their revenue formula PBS style, with a lot more pledge drives.
You'll also see a lot more people on the street holding a clip board requesting donations to keep the station on the air.

Speaking of Educational stations, are the only provinces left for full time Educational channel are
British Columbia - Knowledge Network (Cable Only)
Ontario - TV Ontario / Tele Francais du Ontaio
Quebec - Tele Quebec / Canal Savoir.

Other provinces reduce amount of Educational programmes such as
Alberta - Used to be Access, now it's CTV TWO
Saskatchewan - SCN, now it's Citytv Saskatchewan.

Should CBC/Radio-Canada purchase these Educational network and create CBC 2 or Radio-Canada 2 and focus on Kids/Educational/Documentary Channel like RTP2 in Portugal, NHK 2 in Japan, KBS-2 in South Korea, France 5 in France, RTVE-La 2 in Spain...etc.

I would say it's important for individual provinces to maintain their own provincial public broadcasters. Unfortunately, TVO today provides virtually nothing that isn't on PBS or on cable.

The other provinces and territories don't have a local educational channels are:

Manitoba:
New Brunswick
Prince Edward Island
Nova Scotia
New Foundland

Territories:
Yukon
Northwest Territories
Nunavut

These provinces and territories cannot support a local educational channel. I think CBC/SRC should take over and provide an educational/documentary channel for them.

CBC just went through all the trouble of suffering their own brutal cuts. They even sold their own Bold TV to help better care for their new budget. They can barely handle what they have now. they're not going to bail out the provinces to entertain education or documentaries of any sort.

PLUS TVO serves a unique purpose with some programming exclusive to Ontario. If CBC were to take over, there's no way they'll care about each Province's needs. It will be a one size fits all CBC style Education and Documentary channel anyway.
I can't speak for all Provinces, but that is indeed not what Ontario needs...Especially with a high chance of a Provincial election coming up this spring.

What do they offer nowadays other than The Agenda that you can't get anywhere else? The childrens' programming is virtually identical to PBS. And, many of the other shows I've spotted on the schedule are purchased from cable channels.

The Agenda remains well-produced, though it can be Toronto-centric at times.

Outside of the Agenda, the lineup is pretty much Identical to Knowledge from B.C. I have both and Knowledge is like TVO on a 3 hour delay.

That's interesting. By the way, when I was up in Quebec 3 times in the 80s and 90s, I saw that Tele-Quebec ran commercials between the programming on their network. What a crazy concept.

I'm not fully aware of that station. I do not speak French. Is it the Quebec version (french) of TVO? Or is it more like CBC?

I say more like Radio-Canada, the French CBC -- Tele-Quebec not only shows commercials during its programs now, it also carried American network series in the past. I recall Tele-Quebec including "Dream On" and "Malcolm in the Middle" in their schedule in the early-2000s, the former being in English with French subtitles.

Therefore, knowing CBC English and French Both have ads, it's not fair to compare Tele Quebec to something like TVO.

I think it has somewhat of the "educational" mandate that TVO does, though Citytv Saskatchewan and CTV Two Alberta supposedly do also and obviously are commercial broadcasters.
