TWC question: What's a p1?

On the knockdown, dragout threads about the alleged deterioration of The Weather Channel, I have seen references to something called a "P1". On one of these threads, I asked what a P1 is.

I'm still waiting for the answer.

I can't find anything certifying this, but from what I understand, a "P1" simply refers to a regular viewer or listener of a broadcast. In the case of The Weather Channel, I would imagine the P1's tuning in at the same time are doing so right before they leave for work, or before shutting it down for the night to find out what conditions lie ahead the next day.

I hope my explanation helped, as I was not able to locate a concrete definition. (Who knew there would come a time when Google was not your friend?)

P1 is more of a radio term, but it deals with whatever their target demo is.

If anyone's ever listened to KTCK-AM 1310 "The Ticket" in Dallas (or the webcast at theticket.com), "P1" is one of THE MOST common words/phrases (whatever you consider the term) that station uses. They have a "P1" explanation on their website also.

Actually, easttxtv, there was at least one other sports radio station to flog the "P1" term to death: 1050 ESPN in New York. There was imaging referring to listeners as "P1's" if they listen to most of their shows. I joke, but that's how I first heard of this term. And for the record, they no longer use this term, at least on the air.

Yeah, what they said. Basically, the 'perfect' listener or viewer for a given station/format. Put a different way, a P1 is someone who is in the center of the bullseye as far as demos, income and interests goes. True, it's a radio term - but I tossed it out there in the heat of battle. ;D
