Tweakin' Sunny 105.9

Casual tune-ins during the past two days and I've noticed: quicker pacing by jobs, Stacy on in AM Drive, Brown to PM Drive, mid-days still unsettled. Music mix seems to be pop, rock and even more disco...very few 60s and early 70s stuff. Also, less produced sweepers, more jingles, more jock presence during music sweeps...station sounds more like a '70s Q format.

should read: quicker pacing by the jocks. (excuse fat fingers)

WOCL was on at my job last night. All I heard were segues & sweepers. This would be a good time IMHO for them to pick up Mike Harveys shows so there would be at least some sort of voice on the air besides Ziggy (AKA Charlie B. Smith) the CBS voice guy.

Almost all stations run Jockless late night thru overnight.

I agree...mix is bad...sounds like a lot of the rock hits and disco ditties don't warrant airplay...anywhere! Always play the best...not the stiffs!

Last night I listened to 70's Sat. Night (or whatever they call it now). Chris O'Ryan (sp?) sounded live, taking requests but mentioned the were going to "blow up Saturday nights" in two weeks [he's on a cruise next week]. Is Chris still a full time CBS'er? And as mentioned elsewhere, MIX had the Saturday night AMP party vs. the "Party Mix". Do you think they'll continue to have competing live request shows on Saturday nights?

Just listened Sunday night (Valentine's Day) at around 10pm & suddenly, they are starting to call themselves "1059 Sunny FM" instead of "Sunny 105.9"...?

And this is going to be the answer to all of their problems. I could just imagine the meeting where they decided this. Hey, let's fire two of our full time DJ's, automate nights and re-image the station. We'll be pulling 10 shares in no time ;D

Ya Got that part right Frank....10 share in Daytona, maybe a 2.6 Share in Orlando with a Staff of 2 on Air Personel and an office staff of 30 Execs pushing pencils...Radio can't have enough PENCIL PUSHERS.

The sad part is, when Sunny 105.9 debuted, I REALLY thought they were going to be something special. The imaging had "CBS-FM" written all over it. I assumed CBS had learned their lesson after the whole CBS-FM > JACK-FM > CBS-FM snafu. I heard their launch and was really expecting something great on what is arguably the strongest FM signal in Central Florida.

Instead, we got another jukebox. Ratings and revenue begin the downward spiral. Soon, it will be blown up and replaced with the next format-of-the-month.

And the downward spiral continues...

I too was excited when Sunny 105.9 signed on. I thought we were going to get a "WCBS-FM" in Orlando. It is a shame. They could have been a great station.

I too was hoping they'd become more like CBS-FM. But instead it seems like Rick Stacy has changed the station's presentation, in order to be more consistent with its younger skew compared to other CBS "greatest hits" stations. The music mix doesn't seem to have changed much at all, but the new imaging and more personality-oriented approach goes better with the music, and gives the station some much-needed energy. I'm not sure if these changes will salvage the station's ratings problems, but they do make the station stand out more.

Rick Stacy did turn Y-106 into one of Orlando's top stations during the mid 80s. He played a lot of songs BJ105 wouldn't touch and gave it a "big city" feel at the time.

Looking at the success COX has with 94.5 I am quite suprised that 105.9 doesn't get more aggressive and go more URBAN(ish) with Whitney Houston,Sade,Janet Jackson,Diana Ross etc in it's 80's Mix as well as mainstays like Stevie Wonder,The Temps,The Tops,Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes etc etc etc. It does not make sense to me with the Hits Format playing all the ROCK they play...much of which can be heard on 96.5 or 95.7

Orlando has quite the Top 40 history. And, I'll only mention three here. WLOF, WBJW, Y106. Why not hire the personalities at 'Sunny' who know the city? Know the music? And the listeners know and remember them? The 'Classic Hits' format is not brain surgery. It's all about familiarity. Every song will evoke a memory-most good, some bad in their listeners hearts and minds. Play the music of yesterday, but live in the here and now. Some of those former Central Florida radio personalities are still active in radio and would love to have the chance to make 'Sunny' what it could be.
CBS made quite a commitment to it's classic hits station in New York, as you know. They did all the right things, including, the most important element. They retained the services of air personalities who are closely associated with the music and the city. Once CBS does the same in Orlando, 'Sunny' will become a winner. It IS that simple.
Just my two cents..

Tom, your proposal makes too much sense.

Rick, if you're reading this, I know where Jeff is and I'm sure you can coax us out of "retirement."

Laura Francis & Bob Berry were fired recently from WOCL. IMHO they were "local" personalities. Laura worked on sister station WOMX for a number of years, and Bob worked at 100.3 (WEBG, WSHE) when that was oldies. Do they count? Or like Erika Lee on WOMX, they were getting paid too much.

Tracey Young says she's coaxable, too.
